toutle margaret... big bulls?
« on: November 13, 2012, 07:46:31 PM »
I live in silverlake and spent lots of time in the toutle and margret. I've seen lots of nice bulls and in my experience I have only seen a few that would possibly hit the 300" mark. Just wondering if anyone has actually killed anything in last couple years in the toutle or Margaret that would reach that mark.

Did I miss something? Anyway I've seen more quality bulls come out of the regular units the past few years then permit units.

Margaret had humongous bulls a few years ago. I haven't been there since. Huge bulls. Toutle has tons of elk and is easy to hunt that's why it's permit only. Not huge bulls coming out of Toutle very often. Toutle hunts are kind of a gimme. Margaret is tougher to get into.
Kindly do not attempt to cloud the issue with too many facts.

There was one picture posted on here that was supposedly Margaret, of a big bull would have at least come close to 300. The hunter never came on to share the story and only the one picture was posted.

THe biggest bull I've ever seen was on a bluff on the N.E corner of Spirit Lake about 3 years ago. He was actually in the Lowit unit. Of the hundreds of bulls of seen in the Margaret, I've never seen a bruiser.

:yeah:    A lot of people tend to think any western Wa. elk is a roosevelt.     Go into the Margaret and take some pictures of elk,  then go down to South Bend and take some pictures of elk.  Compare the two sets of pictures and you will see the difference.

Most bulls in the St. Helens herd are cross bred so badly, you can get a combination of characteristics of both Rosies and Rocky Mtn. elk.

That said, if you want a bruiser bull in the Margaret, you are going to have to go into the backcountry and spend some days.  My brother has pictures of a 7x9 bull that would easily go 1000 lbs, just this last summer.  You just have to know where to look.

Yes, they cross back and forth from the Loowit to the Margaret, and back... they know where they are safe.

IF you want to be able to walk 1/4 mile from the truck and shoot a great bull in the Margaret, you will be sorely disappointed.  If you are willing to go 3-6 miles in on some steep rough country and be picky, you can shoot a masher.   Those bulls know where the pressure comes from, and they avoid it like the plague.  There are elk up there that have never seen a human...
By my honorable conduct as a hunter let me give a good example and teach new hunters principles of honor, so that each new generation can show respect for their god, other hunters and the animals, and enjoy the dignity of the hunt.

Calling an illegal alien an 'undocumented immigrant' is like calling a drug dealer an 'unlicensed pharmacist'.

I guess I didn't know st helens elk aren't Roosevelt. Were Rockies reintroduced there after the blast or they are just far enough east? I know there isn't a definitive line that separates them but still thought most elk around st Helen's were Roosevelt.

There is a reason they are not even recognized in the record books as true Rosies...   Yes, the Rocky Mtn. elk and the Rosies meet in the middle, have wild parties, cows get knocked up, and bingo bango bongo.... you have cross breeds...  :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:

Been that way for a long long time.   My buddies 4x4 last year had typical Rocky Mtn. antlers... My brothers this year had typical Rosie antlers, but with a more Rocky Mtn. body type..  True rosies will crown at the top after they get so big... Rocky Mtn. elk do not.
