Go with the 10/22 then have some fun with it. The trigger pull issue is easily fixed.
I have a Browning Buckmark that I absolutely love. It shoots great and looks just as good. They are a little spendy, but they come with a bull barrel and a nice thumbhole stock that you would have to pay extra for on a 10/22. They pull up and point like no other .22 I've shouldered and are very accurate. Another thing is they have the same action as their Buckmark pistols, so the clips are interchangeable. I would buy another in a heartbeat.

I would buy another in a heartbeat. The price issue is a wash at the price they sell for. I've got the same money into my 10/22 including the scope as what those are selling for online. That is a way cool rifle though. Way to get the kids involved.
