Well I went lower in the walk in unit (kapowsin) yesturday and didn't see anything, so went back up to the top and nothing up there either. Got in really early cause it takes three hours to get to my high spot, many miles again today and nothing. No deer in 2 1/2 days, after 20+ miles on foot. I'm done till late muzzy(multi tag), the blacktail broke me down this rifle season. Congrats to all those succesful hunters, nice job guys.
twenty plus miles. My god. your either a marathon man or don't know how to judge distance.  Saw three shooters in there yesterday and didn't hardly get out of the blind.

20 miles in two and a half days id say is very doable. I know I do it on every single one of my back pack hunts with a 45 pound pack  :dunno:

When do you find time to hunt? Here is some data. Naismith's formula from 1892 works well.
The basis is 2 miles per hour, plus an additional 30 minutes per 1000ft of ascent.
Obviously, terrain and personal fitness affects this - for example ploughing through deep mud or snow is a lot slower, but overall this is still a useful method. Now are you hiking only or do you take a peak once in awhile for game? And if your pack is 45 pounds coming in I would hate to know what it weighs coming out if you harvest an animal.....
don't take it wrong but alot of people don't judge distance hiking or shooting very well. If you can hike and hunt that distance my hats off to you.

I use to be able to boot hunt quite well. Age, weight, hip replacements, knee surgerys have changed that. I use my mountain bike if the gate is locked and it is fairly flat. It's amazing how you can get away from the Orange army after one mile! When I was younger I did scale Mt Raineer, Dall Sheep hunted in the Brooks Range, and got myself a booner Mountain goat in this State to name a few critters.
Keep on Truckin!
Pic is this years bucks, six of the Eleven were youth hunters.

Dad's last day (that we could hunt) Chiwawa deer. Needed to put some meat in the freezer.
Saw this when you posted it on facebook.  Good luck on your hunt when it starts this week.  Looking forward to seeing what you find.

If you start hiking 2 hours before light, hike 5 miles behind a gate, hunt, hike back out, and do that 2 days in a row, you got 20 miles easy :dunno:

My pack usually doesn't weigh that much unless I'm spending the night. But 20 miles, absolutely. The majority of those miles are spent walking in the dark just getting into and out of the places you want to hunt. Remember the Susan B Komen walk for cancer is 60 miles in 3 days.

I'm definitely not a marathon runner!! I'm pretty good a judging distance, it's about 5 miles each way in to the place I go to. Then once I got there and hung out for a few hours I did some exploring which I figured was a couple miles one way. At least the way out was easy cause it was all down hill, what took 3 hours 10 minutes to get in, took me 40 minutes to get back to the truck. 3 shooters and what happened?
“In common with”..... not so much!!

Well, I am a little late on this but I am going to post anyway...

My 10 year old son had two tags to fill this year, second deer and general tag, so we headed out first thing Saturday morning and by 2:00pm he had his doe down. Long day, but his patience paid off.

Sunday we went to a piece of private property we have permission to hunt. We checked our cameras when we got there to see wich place would be the best sit. One camera had a buck showing up between 4:00 and 4:30 the last 4 days. Well which place do think we decided to sit? Duh? Come 4:25 we had this nice little buck on the ground. Two deer hanging and good eats in the freezer. Good job son!!! Now it is my turn, late archery!!!

First post from a long time lurker. I have really enjoyed this forum, so I thought I'd share my fortune.

I was able to take this 2X2 on the afternoon of the 15th. He was the largest of three, chasing a doe in a clear cut that I was hunting. He pursued that doe relentlessly while fending off the other two smaller bucks. He finally stopped well clear of the three others to urinate on his metatarsals. 419 yards through the boiler room. He folded where he was standing. Not much of a photo using my cheap cell phone, but I was running out of light and I had a mile and a half hump after I had boned him out. As my luck would have it, I left the bigger pack in the truck. On the second round trip the fog was so thick, I was on the compass for the last mile or so.

My kit,

Here is a picture of my 2012 Mule Deer shot in E. Wash.  Shot him on Forest Service ground during the opening week of the season.  I was walking a draw and had just busted 10 does out due to the popcorn and egg shells i was walking on(anyone hunting over there knows what i'm talking about).  So i decided to watch a small hillside for a while to let things quiet down before moving on.  It wasn't 5 minutes and i heard something snap below and to my left.  i looked but knew it couldn't be anything but a squirrel since the amount of noise the does i busted out of the draw had just made.  Nothing.  A minute later I heard another snap below me so i lowered my bino's and this guy is walking about 40 yards below me chewing on a big mouthful of black moss.  Needless to say I am more than a little shocked!  I slowly brought my gun up and waited for him to clear some brush and put one in him.  He kicked up and started to run away from me.  So I took aim and put another one in him.  I hit him and his nose drove straight into the ground and he did a perfect somersault right over his antlers.
When i grabbed his antlers i just about crapped when i saw the hole in his right antler.  My second shot that drove him in the ground went straight through the center of his antler.  i still cant believe my 300 Win Mag didn't shatter that thing!  He weighed 250 on the hoof.  He has a 4 inch drop tine and a cheater on the same side you can't see in this picture. I dropped him off at the taxidermist and when we looked in his mouth every tooth had had been broken from his gymnastics display.

It is just a Rem. 700 in 7mm WSM. The stock is a McMillan HTG in Forest Camo.
