Gun Smith/Maintenance Check
« on: November 29, 2012, 08:10:00 PM »
A good friend of mine has recently got into shooting and bought a hand gun. Now his grandpa is giving him a 30-30 that hasn't been shot in 30+ years. It has been keep in a dry spot but my friend has come to me asking what he should check out on the gun to make sure it is still in good operating condition.

What are the areas of concern he should be looking at. I told him to bring it over and we can give it a good cleaning and check it out.

Also does anyone have a gun smith they recommend in the greater Seattle area to check out the gun. He is planning on doing this depending on the condition. Or is this something that should be done regardless?

Thanks!

-JH

Id just clean the barrel out with solvent and a good bore brush. run some patches down till it comes out clean then lighly oil. open the action and inspect it for anything out of the ordinary then clean it up. qtips are handy soaked in solvent, then some in oil (lightly). cycle the action and if it feels smooth you should be good to go.  run a solvent soaked wipe over all the metal followed by one soaked in gun oil. use some furniture polish on the wood and clean it up. buy some ammo and take it out and shoot it. should take about 20-30 mins to bring it back to life. enjoy.

Yup. They don't break from age. Clean, cycle, shoot.

 :yeah:

Seattle area gunsmiths are unreliable at best.  If your friend has any mechanical aptitude at all he should learn to take care of routine gun tasks himself.
