help removing rust from inside a barrel
« on: November 17, 2012, 02:41:02 PM »
I have a SKS that I have neglected the inside of the barrel and now I am in need of getting all the rust out. Havent had to do this before so Im looking for options, I know I can run a cleaning brush down it, but can the inside of barrels be re-done? Does anyone on here do that? Not sure if this is the right thread but Im sure someone will put it where it belongs. any help is greatly appreciated.
PM me if you do this kind of work

A little bit of 0000 steel wool perhaps? Don't most SKS's have chrome lined bores?

you can have some rust pits in a barrel and still have it shoot good. Not great just good.

If there is no concerne with it being unsafe, just surface rust, go shoot it and break all that crap up.  then clean it and use any rust remover designed for guns.  I use 000 or 0000 brass wool from ace hardware and regular gun oil.  I have never put it down the barrel though.  mabey contact a gun smith and see if they can dip it.

To be on the safe side as well are there any gun smiths on here that would check it out to ensure its safe?

There are several cleaners that will remove rust...

IF you really want to do it right, use toilet bowl cleaner.  Will remove rust from anything... will remove bluing as well, since bluing is just a controlled rusting process...
By my honorable conduct as a hunter let me give a good example and teach new hunters principles of honor, so that each new generation can show respect for their god, other hunters and the animals, and enjoy the dignity of the hunt.

Will that take the lining off the inside of the barrel and the outside of my barrel is chromed, will the toilet bowl cleaner damage chrome as well?

Will not damage chrome as long as you wipe it off immediately.

I have used this to remove bluing from revolvers for years..

I use Oxpho-blu sold at Brownells.
It takes of the rust and reblues at the same time.
You need gloves and ventilation.
I use 000 steel wool and a brass brush. A little elbow grease and all is good.
It's not true that I am good for nothing---I can be used as a bad example!!
