First Blacktail In About 25 Years
« on: November 18, 2012, 12:52:17 AM »
Well, with a rifle that is. :chuckle:

Was kind of fun tagging one with a rifle after so many with the bow.  Felt good to get some blood on the 7mm A-Bolt I've been working on.  100 yards on the move, off hand, blowing up the liver and bullet stopping in the heart.  Pictures don't do the body size justice.  Big bodied, with thick neck.  Just wish he had the horns to match.  I'm pretty pleased.

Back out tomorrow to try and get the blind squaw a shot.
He asked, Do you ever give a short simple answer?  I replied, "Nope."

I just finished butchering this guy.  Was surprised that he did not have one single ounce of fat anywhere.  Anyone else seeing the same thing on their blacktails this year?

We've taken a few nice bucks in this general area over the years.  Most have a good layer of fat on their hips and flanks.  If my grandfather were still around I'd be getting an ear full about what the weather was going to do over the next four months :chuckle:

Nice buck and nice rifle too!

He looks like a strong, heavy buck.
Kindly do not attempt to cloud the issue with too many facts.

Mine did not have ANY fat and we cut it up ourselves.

Thought I would add a little note for all the knife nuts.  For the first time I used the Havalon Tracer with the #22 blade for capping this guy.  Not only was it the fastest cap job I've ever done, but it was also the cleanest.  I usually use a special screw driver around the horns but didn't feel like trying to find it (who knows where the heck I put it last).  The #22 blade was almost perfect for the task around the horns.  Used only two blades to complete the job and the second is still ready for a bit more work.

Not sure if I will mount this guy or donate the cape to one of the bigger blacktails I have waiting for one.  Either way it looks like the taxidermist will be happy working with this beautiful cape!

Don't know why it has taken me so long to try these knives out.  But, I'm sold.  Looks like it was a great purchase
