Coon hunting

  Happy coon hunting season open!!!. Went icy creek last night and spotted coon crossing road so I went home get my dogs turn back to where I saw and turn loose, I thank my dogs that they found coons with in 300 yds from road. At first, I thought they were on Coyote race    but they treed a three coons up the tree. WHEE...  Blast time. I am glad they start to figure out since I keep my dogs in kennel whole summer.
I better go hunt more coons!

Rooster, it's perfectly legal to coonhunt with hounds, it opened up 2nd of Sep and runs till March 15th.  The only time we cannot run our dogs is whenever there is a modern firearms deer or elk season open in the unit your running in, during the months of Oct and Nov.

technically you can run them during the day right during open mod deer elk? i cant remeber if it was no night hunting with dogs during those seasons or closed completely

Rooster, Yes we are all legally to hunt with hounds on coons statewide ANYWHERE. Expect not pravite land unless u ask for permission.

Machias, Yes you right, I double check with WDFW dept and said we are all good to turn loose!! How many do you get so far? I got 2nd treed so far. Been busy on Elk hunting.    No luck for me yet. Could wack any cows in Gmu 454 but save it till late season I perfer BULL!

No coon dogs yet I would love a couple. I do have a pitbull that is a coon treeing machine the problem is he usually catches them before i get their. He has developed a really bad knee and cannot run without making it worse and i have a really hard time with a $3,000 bill for a non hunting dog but he has been one of my best dogs i have ever had despite their bad reputation. my family really loves him.

My pit had more hunting instinct than either of my Plotts (tracking is another story though).  They may not be the first dog anyone thinks of when you say "hunting dog"--a retriever or hound probably comes to mind first, but I think with the right training, a pit would make a great hunter too.

dont think they'd have the endurance, labs can run stuff too but when it comes down to it they just cant last that long

Good point (though again, it was just the opposite in my backwards dogs!  ).  Definitely pays to know the strengths ands weaknesses of the breeds and the individual dog.  Just people shouldn't rule out a dog based solely on breed (not that you were).

I totally agree I really wish he was not going lame. I can only speek for my dog but he really will not stop stop running untill it kills him his determination is unbelivible. You would be impressed.
