Which .243 round for bobs/yotes/coug(if open)?
« on: February 11, 2013, 09:30:30 PM »
I'm going out this weekend to do same calling and am wondering which of these would be better for an all around predator round.

110 gr soft point (30 rounds) or
58 gr V-max (16 rounds)

I might be able to find more V-max and I could buy 85 gr but these are what I have in stock.  I'd like to not ruin pelts but would still like to have enough rounds to hunt this weekend.  I think the sights are close with the 100s but will be shooting tomorrow.

Thanks for any suggestions.

My Savage shoots 58 gr. Vmax much better than 100 gr. soft points. For bobcats and coyotes I would use 58 gr. for shure. For cougar I'd think about a 80 gr Fedral soft point.

I use the same 100gr ammo on predators that I use when the rifle is out during deer season.

IF YOU WANT THE PELT FROM A COYOTE OR BOBCAT DO NOT SHOOT THEM WITH A 58GR V-MAX!!!!!!!!!!!! :chuckle:They really do make a mess!  I shoot them out of my .243 which is my go to predator rifle and I have shot literally 100's of coyotes with them!  Can't beat them for accuracy and devistation. That being said, I would go with something 80gr or bigger that is not a fragmenting style bullet.  Lots of good mid range weight bullets like partitions and the like that will put the smack down but not punch softballs out the back side.  Hornady makes an 80gr Interbond now that would make a wicked all around predator round but they are a premium bullet that comes with a premium price.  If you don't care about pelts then I recommend the vmax above all other bullets for predators!
It is foolish and wrong to mourn these men.  Rather, we should thank god that such men lived.  -General George S. Patton

I shot one friday with my .243, 95gr Hornady Superformance SST.........looked as though it had swallowed a grenade.  Want to kill yotes?????  .243 is awsome.  Want pelts???  forget it.

you guys all have good points  I like the 100gr hornaday interloc for deer ... but I had my sons shoot a few deer with the 87 gr V-MAX and it did a fine job ...just would not shoot them threw the shoulders ...what a mess they will make  :chuckle:  This is why I love a .243 fun to shoot deadly accurate and good for big game and a heck of a varmit rifle

I use both 100 gr sp it does do some big holes if you hit bone. I just loaded up some 85gr HPBTs almost tested them last week but I forgot the load a round in the rifle. LOL A coyote came in at 70 yards I pulled the trigger and click.  :bash: I chambered a round took aim then boom. My buddy shot and skinned the dog. I shot but missed as he ran off. Luck dog and I didn't get to see what the new round wound do to a coyotes pelt. I will let you know if it is on pelts as soon as I shoot a dog. Good luck hunting.

95 gr. Berger hunting VLD.  haven't wasted a pelt yet, and I keep the pelts Nov. thru Jan.  Just make sure you shoot them where you're suppose to.
