White Antlers
« on: November 21, 2012, 06:39:52 AM »
Why would a bull shot during modern rifle not have much color to his antlers? Did he rub off on a rock? Just wondering, the other bulls we saw had real dark antlers with ivory tips.

Here is a link to a whitetail I killed a few years back. He had some very white antlers. They stick out in the croud of antlers on my rafter in my man shack. I can explain it for sure why they are white.

I've always suspected that they shed their velvet during a rain which washes the blood off the antler...  plus, they avoid rubbing pines and darker wood trees with lots of sap.

Good thought! You may just be right.

Got to thinking on the way home from work last night, If its the rain washing off the blood, why do west side animals have super dark antlers? Must be tied in to sap from the trees they rub. Diet? Hey one thing I know is all antlers are wonderful, no matter the color.

Thanks guys! I figured he must have been rubbing on different stuff or not as much, just thought it was kinda weird since the other bulls in the area all had darker antlers. My dad was giving me a hard time about it telling me he must be a young one and didn't rub his velvet like some of the spikes do. I told dad that he went from velvet right to fighting and never had time to rub on trees, he got his velvet off locking horns with the big boys :chuckle: Anyway guess it doesn't really matter, he tastes great no matter what the color of his horns are.
