Going on First Bear Hunt!
« on: September 05, 2008, 01:35:40 PM »
Hey Guys,

I will be heading over to eastern washington to camp/hunt for bear next week.  Going with my old man, and we are getting really excited!

I'm curious to know for those who have got a bear, do you butcher the bear yourself or take it somewhere to be processed?

Thanks

 Why would you kill a bear if you didn't intend on eating the meat.  I bet if you asked, someone would be more than happy to take the meat.

I will be thinking of you in the morning when I kill my bear, Michelle.  I will be thinking, "Man, Michelle is going to cost me with this....."

I thought this would end up a touchy subject.  Do you ask the same question for those hunting Cougars, bobcats, coyotes?

From what I have been told that Cougar is good table fair.   I have a couple books from a local Bear hunter who personaly said he would eat any cougar he shot.  I have never killed a cougar so I wouldn't know what it taste like.  I'd try it given the chance!

Bear meat is a given.  It's deffinatly good table fair!  Wether you think so or have a tase for it someone else surly will.  So why even consider disposing of the meat?

I have never heard of anyone eating a bobcat or a coyote.  Coyotes are a predator and more numerous than Bear.  They go after live stock and can be a real problem.  Killing them is a game management tool.  Yes their are some problem bears that have to be delt with.

Why are you expanding the topic.  We are talking about Bear!  You are taking way more out of my statement than was intended.

Lion is outstanding meat!!  Yotes and Roberts are furbearers, lions and bear are big game animals and should be utilized as such; hides, skulls, claws and meat.  If you don't like the meat just set it up before hand to donate the meat to a friend or someone in need, easy stuff, but please don't waste it.  :)

Thanks for the replies.  I believe I chose poorly when I used the word dispose.

If I'm lucky enough to ever get one I will have it processed at Kelso Meats where I take my deer.  I will post on here if anyone is interested in some meat, as I cannot eat it all!

ebusa, my statement was not ment ruffle feathers.  I wish you luck on your Bear hunt and if you end up with extra meat I don't think you will have a problem finding someone to take it off your hands.  :) I just don't like seeing good meat go to waste.
