Shed Repair?
« on: November 21, 2012, 04:20:01 PM »
I found a set of sheds from a buck that i had chased for several years in the early archery season. This buck disapeared last year and i think he finally bit the dust. But luckly i found his set from the previous year i saw him. Though he had regressed a few inches i still enjoy looking at his sheds, and i have a special respect for this smart old buck. I was thinking about putting his sheds on a plague or some type of display. The question for you taxidermists is that is it possibly to fix rodent damaged areas? most areas are just holes and would just basically need to be filled! Also, two points were chewed down to were a few inches would need to be added back on. Coloring the sheds would also need to be done. Is the patching of the antlers a hard thing to do personally, or should i have a taxi do the work, and for what kind of cost? not to get a quote just curious

I'm not a taxidermist, so take it for what its worth. I have done several antler repairs using bondo (auto body filler). A little bit of sanding, some cream/tan colored primer, and some wood stain.

The stain won't cover the bondo. Thats what the cream colored primer/paint does, then stain. I do autobody repair, so I just use what I know. I'd practice on a junk shed before I tried a nice set.

Heres a picture of some of my bondo work. I always wanted a droptine buck, so I made my own droptines on a little buck I shot. :chuckle:

Oh... and lets see those sheds!

Those are some nice sets. Too bad there chewed on.  I know there are several taxidermists on here, hopefully they will share some additional info for you  :dunno:
Good luck.
