ABSOLUTELY! I hunt bunnies with one Beagle all the time.

Sweet, because i wanna get a beagle or hound for one or the other. But I don't think my parents are up for more than one more dog...
Especially a highly energetic hound or beagle.

Beagles are awesome. Had one as a kid and whacked many Pennsylvania bunnys that circled back running from that dog. It is a great thing to hear a beagle on a rabbit. Do it once, and you will be hooked!

Nothen compares to bunny huntin in Pa. When I was a kid all I cared about was squirrel hunting and rabbit hunting with my beagle Rascal ... and everyone once in awhile we would bag up a grey or red fox ..I have a good beagle now ( charlie ) but it is getting tougher to find places around my house to run him  My hot spot is now dirt

If you decide to go with a single dog, I would HIGHLY recommend you look at an American Leopard Cur (not to be confused with a Catahoula Leopard Cur, different dog entirely).  One would be perfect for what you want, not nearly as energetic as a hound, they hunt alot closer than a hound, behave a heck of a lot better than a hound, have as good a nose as a hound, handle like a lab.  The other nice thing is if you ever do decide to chase a lion, bobcat or a bear you can throw your dog in with someone elses pack and have some extra fun.

One dog will work great. As far as breed find what catches your eye, then if possible check out the parents of the litter before buying. Been around several different breeds of dogs. I've seen behaved, mis behaved, high strung, lazy, mean, and nice in all. Think a little of it has to do with breed and most of it with the owner. My hound is very calm and well mannered. However I've been around several that jump all over ya.

Curs are good dogs, def more mannered than hounds in most cases. But they can't hunt like hounds, pure and simple. I'd never get a cur, they dont suit me nor would a beagle. I'd do alot of research to see exactly what breed fits what you want to do.

There you go gettin' carried away again   And here I was starting to get the impression you had killed a real animal or two in your past.

Bunny huntin' is certainly fun.  And PA bunny hunting is far better than it is in Washington.  But beyond compare?  Guess it's going to take longer than thought to beat the PA out of you.


I know some serious bunny hunters that never hunt more than one dog at a time.  That way they always have a fresh dog on each flea bitten varmint.

We had two coon dogs as kids.  Single dog seemed to do just as well as two.  Only real difference I noticed is that a dog running coons by itself tends to get higher vet bills and a lot more stitches.

Not too get into the breed debate,    but that's a very broad stroke.  I ran blueticks, plotts, redbones and walkers for several years and then ran some American Leopard Curs.  Hands down they hunted as well as any hound I've ever had, just as good a nose, just as strong of a track and tree, faster than most, grittier on average, but handle and behave like a good lab.  Against my vote the ALCBA voted to allow them to be included in UKC as the Leopard Hound.  I still register mine as curs, but plenty of folks know they hunt every bit as good as a hound.

VERY true, most hounds are a reflection of the houndsmen's time and effort.  I've seen well behaved and well mannered hounds.

Always quick to protect your beloved curs , it was a broad statement though. Never hunted or seen them hunt in person, and I've learned damn near any dog can run critters if trained too. But i still won't be caught dead with a half bred lab in my dog box
