280 question?

I have a friend that is interested in getting a 280 ruger or possably a 280 remington mt rifle.

what is your experiance with this rifle caliber.

What does this compair to? from a 270 stand point?

Just like a 270 with slightly more bullet options. GREAT cartridge, FAR superior to the 7mmMag. real balistics are very close to the Magnum with much less recoil, better barrel life etc.. just an old 30/06 case necked to 284.
I really like it, but dont own one.

The 280 Remington is right between the 270 Winchester and the 30/06. Same case, different diameter bullets. The 280 is a great cartridge, but then so are the other two, and there isn't much, if any, practical difference between them. One thing that may be a slight advantage if a guy does not handload, is that the store bought 270 cartridges are loaded to their full potential, whereas the 280 and especially the 30/06 may not be. If you're a handloader, just go with the 30/06.

well he is geting a good deal on the 280, but isnt sure about performance.....just wants to make sure that he buys a straight shoter, but from what i have seen, its a great gun! just wanted to know more about the caliber......

I had a 280 Mtn rifle for a few years until the Yakima Welcome Wagon decided it would be my donation to the community(house broken into 2 months after moving up here).

It is a great cartridge.  I shot both handloads and factory shells and loved all results.  My best performer was a 166gr Sierra Boattail if I remember correctly.  Actually still have a few along with some brass if your buddy wants them.

Great caliber, my father has killed many deers with it.  I reload for it and the choices bullets are good.

The .280 is a fantastic round.  If your friend is handloading he'll be extremely happy with it.  It has a great bullet selection available also.  It is hard to have a 7mm that does not shoot great.  It is one of my favorite rounds for elk as it performs well on longer shots and still has enough punch up close.  It has the best of both the .270 and the -06.

Jay that 280 has been released with several names, I think 280, 7mmexpress, mabey others. I see ammo in stores all the time. I ma gonna do some searching and report back.

It's nothing more than a 30-06 and nothing less than a 270. I see plenty of ammo for it.

I've had a 280 for about 15 years.  It is a great cartridge.  Balistically I'd rank it slightly superior to the 270 because of the bigger 7mm bullet.  It really shoots 140s and 150s well and even the 160s.  I've killed bear, elk, deer, antelope, and caribou with it.  IMO one of the most underrated cartridges out there.   

My buddy's dad has literally dozens of rifles/cals and his favorite big game cal is the 280 (for what that's worth).

Great round the 280 is.  My father has shot a custom mauser in this caliber for years.  Antelope, elk, deer have all been taken cleanly.  Great choice of bullets, easy to reload, not a bad choice for anyone.

.280 Rem is a great caliber.  My brother used his on his moose last year.  I turned mine into a .280 Ackley about eight to ten years ago and love it even more.

I use a Rem 280 a majority of the time when deer hunting. I love it, nice straight shooter! Id compare it to a .270 with a little something extra  as far as shooting goes.

Like suggested before..finding ammo can be a pain at times and isnt the cheapest!

Ackley improved. Basically the same but the case is straightened allowing for more powder. Ackley was a wildcatter who improved a whole host of cartridges.

The implication I was making was more for weight/velocity combo not really diameter.  The 280 seems to have a sweet spot in that 140 -160 grain range where it shoots them well and still maintains good velocities.  I personally consider it a slightly better cartridge than a 270 for that reason.  And yes, I know you can shoot 150s with a 270 just like you can shoot 180s or > with a 30-06 and 175s with a 280.    Again, IMO in the bullet weights in wheelhouse for performance just seems to be for bullet weights that fall right in that range that a lot of folks like to shoot.  No slam on the 270 at all.  To a large degree it is splitting hairs.  I would feel fine shooting 30-06, 280, or 270 90% of the time.  Hard to go wrong with any of em.

  i shoot 140gr accubonds also outa my .280 and doubt i'll change anytime soon. AWESOME caliber. if you don't reaload your own rounds i would look at a 270 or an '06, the 280 seems to be really picky on what load combinations it likes.

The latest Cabelas ad I got yesterday had .280 Rem on sale.  May be something to jump on.  Can't recall the price.  It is a great caliber as many have said.  Not terribly popular but probably the perfect non magnum cartridge.

I had a Rem M700 KS Mt Rifle in 280 in the late 80's. I relaoded the Nosler 140gr Ballistic Tip over a max load of IMR 4350. It was an awesume combo.

270, 280, 30-06, Cant go wrong with any of them. They just work. Easy to reload for these too. Folks do not really need a big magnum to hunt with. I would choose any of these to hunt in the lower 48 anyday over a magnum! Magnum shooters have a good skill. I don't like the recoil. I think if I get to Alaska, I would take the '06.

The only real difference between the .280 and the .270 is the .280 can shoot 175gr bullets.  Both are necked down 30-06 cases.  One is .277 and one is .284.  .007 difference.  There is really no difference in velocity between the two, shooting the same bullet weights.  Anyone that says there is, is full of

Actually the .280 is a little longer to the shoulder that the 30-06 so you can't chamber a .280 in a 30-06 or .270.
.270 & 30-06 base to shoulder =1.9480
.280 base to shoulder =1.9992
there was/is a cartridge that is 7mm-06 but not the .280

Mine is a Rem. 700 KS custom mountain rifle.  Rem. just discontinued this rifle this year

I've only shot factory ammo out of mine, and love what I've seen with the new Federal Premium trophy bonded tip in 160 grain.  I had tree boxes of the Hornady's light mag SST 139 gr. and didn't like them.

Someday when things quiet down a bit with me, I would love to start reloading and try the 140gr accubonds.
