Hanwag Boots

I'm starting the search for a new pair of hunting/hiking boots. I'm recovering from Achilles tendon surgery and will have anther surgery in December. My Vasque boots have been great, but the doc saws time for a taller, stiffer boot. I've heard nothing but good on the Hanwag, but they aren't cheap. Not afraid to drop $350, but would like to know it's well spent 1st. Any opinions would be great!

Haven't tried hanawags yet, but kenetreks and cabelas meindles might work for ya.  I tore my Achilles a few years ago, not bad enough for surgery yet, but am finally trusting it again.  Still, I don't rule out surgery someday on it.  Follow what PT says and it'll get better.

Thanks for the encouragement, my 2nd surgery comes on the heels of my 1st. 6 weeks after that I'll start PT. Outlook is positive, but Ortho thinks a good pair of high, stiffer hunting boots will help. Exploring my options and soliciting others experience now.

I have cabelas maindl Canada hunters. They are 11" tall and pretty stiff side to side. Can be tightened very tight to hold well. I like taller boots for he added support but my ankles are in good shape. The stores don't stock them unfortunately.lately tho. Have to be ordered

I have Kenetrek Mountain Extreme's and they are tall and stiff. Great boot in my opinion. They do have a wider heel box though, so if you have narrow heels, you need to consider that. They have excellent ankle support and can be tightened down good.

I have a pair of Hanawag boots and they are the best money I've ever spent on hunting gear. If you're gonna get them the inserts are worth the money as well. They're that expensive for a reason.

I have the mountain light boots. So far they have held up well, but this is my first season with them. They are well built and I foresee having them for several seasons at a minimum. The boots are stiff, but I think that's how they are supposed to stay because they have a lot of miles on them and are still stiff.

I have the Hanwag Trapper Elite GTX from Hanwag. I also purchased them from Lathrop and Sons along with a custom footbed. They are by far the best pair of boots  have ever owned. The break in was rough and uncomfortable. I was a little worried at first. After a couple days and a few miles they were great.

Also, if you're looking for stiffness in the boot, the Kenetrek Mountain Guides really fit that bill.  I've worn most boots, and I still choose the Kenetrek Mtn. Extreme.   Good luck, and heal up quick......no pun intended.

Thanks again everyone! I talked with Lathrop yesterday and think I'm going to order a set of Atlas GTX. A 8" boot should cover me well for any of my serious hiking or hunting needs. As an added bonus, they're on sale too. I hope to be ready to hunt spring turkey and even come up to my property in late April.

boots are here, so far so good. been wearing the alaskans around the house and theyre feeling good. i think ill take them outside soon

Hey fill, how do they fit compared to your regular size boot, are they true to size? I ordered some of the Alaskans as well, and am expecting them in the next day or two, couldn't pass up the sale price, have heard nothing but good things about any of the Hanwag boots.

i ordered same size as other mountain boots ive trued on and they seem to be a good fit so far.
similar in fit to lowa's. they fit my narrow ankles well. kenetreks and asolo do not fit me well.

Mine are on the way too. I ordered my normal hunting boot size also, on the advice of Scott at Lathrop. He said it's a good idea to call him for sizing since he likes to use the UK sizes for truer fit. Can't wait for them to show up, even though I'll only have a week until my next surgery.

I'm going to give Lathrop a call one if these days. Been looking at the Kenetreks, Crispis and Zamberlans.

Have gone through too many cheap boots and sore feet in the past. Time to invest in some comfort.

The Hanwags have been, so far, really good for me.  I have a lot of trouble with heel slip and I can't wear Kennetreks (although they are a really well made boot) and the Hanwags have a better heel cup in them and I don't get any heel slip.

Exact same reason I use the Hanwags.  Sure wish they used the same hardware as Kennetreks.  I've lost a few speed loops on mine over the years.  Something I have never seen with Kennetrek and cant even imagine seeing.  The squaw goes through boots like I can't believe.  Absolutely murders them.  Two years in Kennetrek and her boots still look like new.  Wish I could say the same thing about the Hanwags.  Both great boots though.

got about 50miles in the alaskans so far so good other than a slight pinch in the front of my ankle about 10mi into a day. not sure if it was my sock or the way i had them laced, just breaking them in, or just my ankle hurting not from the boots at all

If you have a size 13.5 hoof, Sierra has a discontinued Yukon for $240, not GoreTex.

Not in the budget for me, but I noticed Sierra Trading Post has some Hanwags for pretty good prices - you could really get a steal with the right coupon!  Several styles to choose from too.
