Anyone else into calling & rattling blacktails
« on: September 06, 2008, 07:10:30 AM »
After reading a few articles on this subject I started trying it. I am shocked at the success I'm having. I hunt muzzleload, and always waited till late season to rattle or call. That all changed three years ago. Now I rattle starting in mid September with great success.

I have never rattled before, but I plan to start this season. I was also going to wait until the late season, but maybe I should give it a try this month. Any helpful hints/tricks you can share?

It is fun! just have to be patient. It seems like everytime I get up to leave cause nothing is happening I spook off a buck .  :chuckle:. Never tried it in september, makes sence though.

Do you guys mix calls in with the rattling or just rattle, wait, rattle, wait?

I'm no pro at all, I have called in a few just dont have the patience. I rattle along with using "The Can" . Or I may only use one or the other. I find myself using just the can more than rattling. I killed that drop horned buck by calling him in to close range with the can, came in flehming and grunting! Twas a rush!!

I have alot of deer around the house, so I experiment  alot. I find that bucks are establishing dominance as soon as the velvet comes off. We usually rattle about 20 yards inside the timber. The bigger bucks 9 times out of 10 come in through the timber. If you have a ground blind so much the better. I start off slow & light.......many sets, then grunt 2 or 3 times then really work the rattle. Usually takes 4 or 5 sets to get a response for me. Doe bleats have worked for me but only during the rut. I also have the best luck with a rattle bag, I think because they are louder.

Never had any luck rattling for blactails. Even back in AR with whitetails, I never had much more one or two times that bucks showed up.
