Optics for Varmit AR?

Just got done building a 20" Bull flat top. I have been looking for optics and have been reading mixed reviews. From what i have read a single piece mount is best and i am leaning towards the Nikon M-223. I like the idea of turrets or a bullet drop reticle. I'm not looking to win any medals just trying to do it right the first time.

Anyone have any experience with this?

I have been happy with an optic from Leupold, the Mark AR series.  Very affordable.  Bought the one piece Leupold base that I am very happy with but thought that hundred bucks or so was sort of spendy.  Would do it again however.

This base gets you good scope height and proper eye relief, sometimes a struggle with the AR.

My brother in law has one like the leopold but it has small rails over the scope tube so you can mount a light. Don't know what brand. It looks a lot like the Leo tho.

Thanks for the replies! That single mount has great reviews and looks to be the one. I had no idea leupold mad AR specific scopes. I'll have to go find a shop i can compare side by side as the leupold is much more $$.
Thanks Special T i forgot about that also. I have a primos red light i could put on there as well if it were railed.

It works really well because its easy to line up with your scope, so you can see what you are doing!

I learned the value of a lighted reticle recently on a night hunt.  I couldn't see the reticle in the dark, but I could see the red dot!

Choice of optics has alot to do with the type of hunting you do and the terrain you do it in. 

For calling coyotes here in western WA, forests or sage country I like a 1.5x6 or 1x4 varialble with them set on the lowest power, to me FOV is everything as alot of my shots are under 20yrds. but I'm very comfortable out to 300 with these scopes.

For open country coyotes and smaller targets(gophers/P-dogs) a 4x16 or 6.5x20 wouldn't be out of the question.

Bushnell Elite 6500 2.5-16 does it all.

Go with the Mark AR. You will be happy with it. I just added one to my collection the other day.

Thanks for all of the info! I'm glad I came here first! I put my donor scope on there for now. I'm going to go with the burris PEPR mount for my red light and save up for a leupold. Although that bushnell would be about right. I think they still do the LEO/MIL discounts.

I like having the FOV but also like the higher power for paper. Something middle of the road. It had its first rounds through yesterday got on paper with ball, shot just under an inch with v-max and just over 1/2" with 69gr SMK's.

You might look at the IMS by leupold. That is what I used to mount my Mark AR and also put another one on another build. I really like those mounts!

If you are dead set on the P.E.P.R mount I just saw Joebob has them on sale. I don't know what they sell for other places but this look's to be a great deal.

If you are not in a hurry, Rock River's Hi-Rise scope mount is $50, and just as good as the PEPR mount.  I say not in a hurry because RRA is so busy that orders take quite a while to get out.

I have a 6.5-20x50 30mm tube and I have a RRA Hi-rise Cantilever mount on my AR and I love the set up. I get the low power field of view stuff but, I hunt the brush and it works just fine for me. It is really nice to have the zoom when you need it. Biggest point is practice with whatever you choose. It does not matter much if your not comfortable with what you have.
