How do you feel about people putting in for a permit they have no intention of using?

Good for them. Save a doe.

I don't agree with it. It's screwing someone else out of a permit they actually want to use.

It's their permit. They can do what they want with it.

Intentionally Eating an Antlerless Permit
« on: November 29, 2012, 08:06:31 AM »
I have been pondering this with myself for a while now. What are your thoughts? I know this could very well turn into a heated debate and go down hill from there. I don't mind  :chuckle: :chuckle:.

Why the hell would someone put in for a permit when they know they are not going to use it?  That makes zero sense.  I can see not being able to use it because something comes up or you get one before the permit season.  Some people might really want a tag and its not right for people to put in that have no intent of using it. Plus why would you give the state your money for no reason.   My 2 cents.

I've got a buddy that drew a multi season permit last year. Never did buy it because he said it cost too much.

Another buddy drew a quality buck tag then didn't feel like going deer hunting.

i have heard that in some states the antis are doing this now.. flooding the permit system with applications, the ones they win are never used, so they are taking hunters out of the field basically..
By my honorable conduct as a hunter let me give a good example and teach new hunters principles of honor, so that each new generation can show respect for their god, other hunters and the animals, and enjoy the dignity of the hunt.

I have heard the same thing.

Of course some have life changes that keep them from using, I thought about entering a few draws this year and later I ended up moving.  Luckily I decided at the last second to abstain from participating.

I know a few people that think the state is miss managing our wildlife and giving out too many antlerless tags. So they put in for them that way if they get drawn they figure they are saving a doe.

This discussion isn't about that. We all know life happens and that's totally understandable. I'm talking about knowing BEFORE you even put in for it that you won't use it.

Fine with me, revenue for the state from tree huggers and less deer killed before I draw again.

The managers setting permit levels assume an estimated rate of non-usage. It could actually cause a higher success ratio than desired if everyone hunted that buys or draws a tag. I think this is a non-issue.  ;)

In South Dakota you get a doe tag with your reg tag. Personally I save a doe. More does = more deer. Never can be enough deer for me.

I have zero interest of shooting a doe. That's just me. Does nothing for me and the amount of meat you get isn't worth it. Call me green, but that's how I see it. I only believe in shooting mature bucks that have had a chance to live.

I should add I wouldnt actually out in for a special permit to save a doe.

I simply wouldn't put in for a permit I didn't plan on using. However, if life stuff comes along and you are not able to use it then so be it.....S happens.

me personally i think only youth and seniors or disabled guys should be able to shoot a doe, guys that can get around and put in the effort for a buck then thats good enough, there is no way that any land in this state is at its carrying capacity of doe, i know you cant eat antlers, well who in their right mind hunts without visions of a monster buck of any type walkn out in front of ya where you can get a whack at him, as for permits for antlerless save those for youth and disabled or seniors  :twocents:

I agree with both sides in this. I can see it from both sides. I do like management and love the doe tags for this. Heck I had 2 clients with doe tags and 1 myself. All 3 were filled with does that did not have fawns or were not breeding anymore. I can also see not feeling a tag if the numbers are down in some area's.

This is exactly what the wolf huggers do, buy up all the wolf hunting permits and sit on them thinking they are saving a wolf.

So Idaho made them OTC for anyone then close the season when the quota is met.

In this case however, you think you're saving a doe.

Well i ate a cow tag last year!  I put in because it would be a fun hunt if I didnt draw something else.  Jenna and I both killed bulls and bucks out of state so there was no reason to kill another cow.  Why would it matter to anyone else if they fill their tags or not?

There are urban areas near Spokane with far too many deer. When you are driving down a residential road in mid day summer and see 15-20 deer per block these areas definitely need some thinning to avoid runins with people and cars.I feel archery hunting in urban areas where legal is a good way to remove some deer and add to the animals fear of humans as well. I have no problem shooting an antlerless or female animalwhere and when allowed. But I still would rather shoot a bull or buck. That said I think the second deer tag price is a bit much.

If they pay for the permit, it's up to them. If they just apply and then don't buy it, they suck. Doe permits are sold ostensibly because the deer population in that area needs to come down. There's a reason for them to be sold.

Maybe look at it this way....if someone has an cow/doe/whatever tag in an area you would like to draw for and doesn't fill it....well.....better for you if you draw next year!

I drew my first second deer permit this year. I was lucky enough to harvest a Bull and a buck already so I dont really need a doe.  While I don't want the tag to to waste, I also don't want to risk wasting any meat.  Intentionally wasting a tag seems stupid to me.

You have to remember that even if you never had any interest in hunting a cow or doe and had put in for a special permit in the past you were given equal points arcoss the board in those antlerless categories. I'm sure there are a lot of us that didn't have antlerless interest that were all of a sudden toward the top of the list of the antlerless categories. Those people may still have zero interest but just apply to dump the category. :dunno:

I think I would intentionally eat the doe I killed with the permit... Other than that I wouldn't apply for it if I didn't intend to use it if drawn....

:dunno:

People around here do it to prevent cows from being killed.  They will get a tag and throw it in the garbage and start applying again next year.  They say "potentially saving a cow is worth $6"  :dunno:

I drew my first second deer permit this year. I was lucky enough to harvest a Bull and a buck already so I dont really need a doe.  While I don't want the tag to to waste, I also don't want to risk wasting any meat.  Intentionally wasting a tag seems stupid to me.
Thats why they shouldn't allow hunters to draw mutiple tags , draw in order of preferance ie quailty , bull , antlerless . one you draw one catigory then lock it .
