Scored a bow for the lady
« on: September 07, 2008, 11:29:17 AM »
My girlfriend has taken a huge interest in archery this summer...  8) 8) 8)

We've been to the local shops and looking around, and settled on a Diamond Edge...but no one had any in stock. A few weeks of waiting, and her disappointment growing, we found a deal on an Alpine Archery Micro at Sportman's Warehouse that seemed to fit very well.

Retail is $229, but it was an '07 model marked down to $149 (bare).
As our luck would have it, our sportsman's only had the 40lb model.
The guys at sportsman's in Burlington were very helpful and they took some time and located a 50lb model at the Federal Way store--so they are shipping it to my door at no additional cost.  It should be here in a couple days.

Of course, they also offered free setup and installation of accessories when the bow arrives...but since the cams on this bow do not require a press to adjust draw length, we *likely* won't need any help.

We also picked up a Whisker Biscuit QS to use as a rest, and a mediocre Tru-Glo fiber optic 3-pin sight. We just need to come up with a decent 4 or 6 arrow quiver and some dampeners.

Sorry, no pictures yet...but I'll be sure to post a few as we set it up and test it out.
In the mean time, this is just me bragging about how anxious my lady is to archery shoot and hunt with me.  :IBCOOL: :IBCOOL: :IBCOOL:

If anyone has any suggestions for good, durable, carbon arrows that won't break the bank, we would much appreciate it. At the moment we're looking at a half-dozen of "Sportsman's Warehouse" branded carbons for $30.
Price being the big factor, since a few will probably be lost in short order.

Some specs:

* Mass weight: 3 pounds.
* Axle to Axle: 32 inches.
* Brace height: 5.5 inches.
* Draw weight: 50 pounds.
* Cam: Stalker Cam.
* Draw lengths: 21” through 28”  (She draws ~26.5-27")
* IBO speed: 280 fps.
* Limbs: Bi-Flex composite limb.
* Cable Guard Straight mounted carbon.
* Sight window 5.5” single plane window.
* Pocket: Pivoting Limb Mounting System.
* Riser Colors: Realtree Hardwoods Green HD.
* Grip: Two piece ABS panel grip.
* Let-off: 65% Standard

And perhaps the best part of all....no plastic parts! Everything is machined aluminum. Pretty good considering the price, IMHO.

Check out the Alpine archery quiver,  I love mine.  Quick disconnect with out the lever to break off at some point.  As far as arrows I thought someone on here was talking about getting some from Walmart that were OK.

That`s great that you lady is getting into archery with you. Like BC CHASER said, alpine makes a good quiver. As for the arrows, for field point shooting, any properly spined arrow will work.

Well, we ordered the bow right at closing on Saturday night and it was shipped out monday (fed-ex)...we had it on Tuesday at 10:00am!

I threw the Truglo and Whisker biscuit on, squared it up, and took it down to sportsmans. They threw in a peep sight (no charge!) and set us up with a half-dozen of the Sportsman's house-brand carbon arrows with blazer vanes, cut to length for $34.

I took a few pop-shots with it last night to get the sights roughed in, but I'll give a full report Saturday when she gets to shoot it.
Overall, I'm very pleased with the quality of this bow...and our bow-buying experience at sportsmans. The Burlington store has some very knowledgable, courteous techs in the archery department.

Now for me...
I went to Joes yesterday with my brother-in-law to look at the Fred Bear Lights Out which is currently on Sale. Grandpawrichard was working the hunting department and gave us the 411 on this bow.

BTW, GrandpawRichard, I introduced myself and left my contact info with you...but neglected to note being a  Hunt-WA member.  :dunno:

I'm heading back to Joes today to put my 70lb Fred Bear Lights Out on order...$264 (bare) is a screaming deal for a new, 30" Axle-Axle bow that is shooting 300fps IBO.

This will be replacing my 9-year-old 60lb PSE Nova.
The good part is how much smoother, quieter, and faster this bow will be....the bad part is how much lighter my wallet will be after this week, and the fact that I won't be able to play with my new bow until I successfully harvest my archery deer with my current setup (refuse to switch mid-season!).
