Deer mount question
«
on:
December 04, 2012, 10:00:11 AM »
I know it is personal preference, but should the deer 1) face forward, 2) look slight left, 3)look slight right, 4)head up high.
BTW. I am surprised at how long a head/shoulder mount takes. Over a year was the estimate.
Thanks

Part of it depends on where it is going. I like a turn to one side to help keep the antlers and a pleasing angle.

I prefer a right or left turn.
Wall Pedestals are what I really like. They just add a lot of character to a mount. Plus they have a turn and can still look to the center of a room.
Personally I can't stand a mount that looks streight ahead. I don't care how good the taxi is they all look stuffed. Deer in the head lights of a train look.

Another way I've determined when picking which way it faces was what way the animal was facing right before I pulled the trigger. That image is an image burned into my memory and I like to look up on the wall looking at the mount which resembles how I saw that animal last before I harvested it.

left or right for where your going to hang it.. Never do a straight mount. What are you getting mounted? I would ask your taxidermist to use a mckenzie form on your mount.. Unless its a blacktail then it will be a reasearch manikins form

I figure out where I'm going to hang it in my house first and decide how to mount based on where I want him to be facing

My blacktail and a nice cork screw point on the left so I had mine look right to accentuate the left side cork screw.

Depends on where you are hanging it.... Generally you will want the animal facing towards you as you enter a room....but it's what ever floats your boat....

I also suggest the "howling at the moon" pose.....chin up, mouth open, eyes blazing wide open!

My mount faces the front door as you walk into the room.

There was a spot in the family room where I grew up that had one of my dad's deer and an antelope and a buck of my mom's all staring at, from three different walls. It was kind of freaky to stand there.
My dad's buck was a regal 4X4 WT from WY with it's head held high and turned slightly whereas my mom's was a dark-faced 4X4 WT from some swamp in northern WI, it's head was also turned slightly but was lower in a sneaking position.
I think it depends on the deer/antlers and where you plan on putting it. I would like having them looking at me from where I usually see them whether it is a doorway or a recliner.
