The first time I had saw a shovler, was at crabcreek. My dog brought back what I thought was a green head. :yike: :yike: The thing kinda freaked me out. I thought I had shot a retarded mallard. :chuckle: :chuckle:

It's a boot lip duck.  A smiling mallard as a nickname by hunter's!  Lol. A spoony!
Cut em!
It's not the shells!  It's the shooter!

Bone, if that is a recent photo, then I don't think it's an immature bird.  I think it's just not fully plumed out yet.  Northern Shovelers are one of the species of duck that does not get fully plumed out until late in the year, sometimes not until January and February.

Once fully plumed out, they are ranked right up there to a Wood duck as far as beauty goes in my book.  They are a gorgeous bird.

Shot 4 fully plumed drakes last sat at Ridgefield.
The colors were real bright.
It's not true that I am good for nothing---I can be used as a bad example!!

I took it yesterday.  I jumped a couple males that looked "mature" This guy stayed with three other lady friends.   I agree, I would love to get a fully plumed mature one.   I saw a flock of them last year for the first time and was very impressed.

This bird was killed the third week of October last year.  Has decent color for that early.
