GREEN WATER AREA

first i want to make sure that green water is in the white river gmu... and then any info on the are would be greatly appreciated.

ive been trying to find a map on line that shows all the roads but havnt been able to locate one, i want to start heading up there after work to see if i cant fill my archery tag.

im not looking for anyones honey hole just a point in the right direction to maybe stumble across some deer, bear and maybe a grouse or two, its so close to home and i  never take advantage of it so any help would be great.

Yes, Greenwater is in the White River unit, but is permit only for Archery Elk.  Not sure on deer.
Roads are 90% NFS roads and should be on any good map or Gazeteer.

Hunted that area for almost 20 years now.  Pretty bummed it is permit only for elk now.

yah i remember hearing about them switching it to permit only... but i got a cabin in the williams creek unit where its antler less or 3 pt or better and theres always fresh tracks in the cabins back yard every  morning, so i was mainly going to green water for deer.

There are lots of deer there as well.  I have had good luck at the very top of the 74 where it meets with 72 in years past.

i was wondering are the roads marked to where i could just turn off onto it, or would i need a map to find it?

They are marked.  From greenwater going towards Rainier the first major FS road (brown sign) you come to is 70.  70 will go up an over Government Meadows.  Off of 70 is the 72 wich will go up and over to meet 74.  If you stay on 410 instead of taking 70, you will come to 74.  Both of these will be on your left.  Lots of country up there, but lots of people during general season as well.

alot of that area you have to buy a permit to drive on.  we use to hunt it alot but got tired of paying the fee.  we did get luck a couple of times for deer but seldom hear of any real nice deer coming out of there now.  I live in Buckley and hunt around Mud Mt Dam a little.  Be careful because alot of it is private owned now.  The elk were down in the pastures a couple of weeks ago but they seem to have moved out for now. Talked to a security guard last year and he said the deer population has gone way down and really only sees them way up 410 and high in the hills now.

There are big bucks there, no question.  Very few and far between.  It has always been my late hunt fall back option for a meat buck.

I was up on the west side of the 70 road,2 days ago.The green river area was marked pretty well.We did see a bear feeding of course on the 485 unit about 500 yrds in.the berries were ready,didnt see a grouse.I did see damage from people off roading where they shouldnt,wont be long they will gate that.Good luck

Has anyone heard how the hunting is Wilkeson is.  I'll be heading up there for the modern season starting on oct. 11.  I live in Buckley so it's nice to hunt close to home.

I live in Buckley as well. If you don't have a Hancock permit be prepared to work your butt off. The area gets a huge amount of hunters during the general season, esp since the gas prices went up. Get off the beaten path and walk in to get away from the road hunters and you'll see more, find some more recent clearcuts and do some glassing.

That's basically what I have decided on doing.  There are a few clear cuts that I hunted in previous years with some success and went up a couple weeks ago and saw some promising sign and the general look of the clearings was nice.  The problem is they were a ways back and I'm going to have to leave REAL early to get to them.  But hey that's hunting right.
