Broke off or never grown by injury.    ELk are the last to shed.  Right now POSSIBLY deer though its pretty dang early and moose are just starting. IMO

I agree moose are the first to shed then whitetails then mule deer then elk and i have seen elk packin both sides as late as the begining of may.

Sure it got broke off. I got vid of a bull like that one u saw.  Picked up his brow tines with part of his skull attatch to it.  Saw him a few months later bout ready to die.

If I remember right, there was an article in the outdoors section of the Yakima Herald a couple of years ago about a bull at the Oak Creek feeding station that had naturally shed an antler there in December.

If this pic was taken out by the wind farm We saw this bull during rifle season. I bet it got broke off during the rut. 

He was running around with a herd of 200 or so elk.

I've seen Blacktail well into May still packin too.

Did you get a look at the base? That would answer your own question.  Ive known of a couple bulls that were early drops consistently every year..Not this early..but not much later.

Never thought I'd see a calf with spots in December, but I did........was at the Oak creek feeding station..........even got a pic or two of it, just have to find them........nothing is set in stone when dealing with wild animals.   

You are right. Nothing is set in stone. Bucks harvested in november with velvet still on. Does with antlers. Calf elk with spots in the winter. Shooting a buck in october, then having his antlers drop as you drag him out. Spike elk who don't drop all year. Many, many things in nature you can't figure.
