Dustins Bear
« on: September 09, 2008, 04:28:25 PM »
Dustins first bear, taken on Sept 1 2008.
I have two treestands in one tree, set up so I can film the boys deer hunting. We are setup in a narrow timber patch between a couple old clearcuts. Its a natural funnel, and the animals use it moving between the feeding and bedding areas.
I had climbed up into my stand, and was watching Dustin tie his bow and backpack to his pull up rope, and noticed I had dropped my facemask. I asked Dustin to grab it. As he grabbed it, I saw this bear in the trail, about 15 yards away behind him. It was staring at him, but not moving. I quickly and quietly told him "Psssst! Bear right there!". I couldnt shoot it as it was on the wrong side of the tree, so I told him to untie his bow and whack it..  But he had no intentions of shooting this bear on ground level.   :bdid: he thought..He was in his stand in about 3 seconds. lol..
I was actually shocked that it stood there long enough to untie his bow and pack, nock an arrow and shoot, but it did!
It wasnt a perfect shot, but it worked. We jumped it twice while bloodtrailing it. So I decided we needed to back out and recover it in the morning. It was only about 70 yards from where we jumped it the last time..

Thats a heck of a story and Dustin should be proud. Alot of guys are still waiting for the opportunity to get their first bear with a bow. did you get to film the shot?
