Skokomish A Elk Hunt
« on: July 31, 2007, 04:07:06 PM »
Very cool site, I am not sure why I had never found it before?  Anyway, I drew a Skokomish elk tag and was wondering if any of you have ever hunted or hiked in this unit?  I know the area pretty well around the Wynoochee and a little around the S. Fork Skok but that is pretty much it.  I do have some scouting trips planned but any info at all would be greatly appreciated!  :) Eric

This may seem doom and gloom, but I thought the indians had gotten most of the elk in there.

Been there done that "bugled in three indians with guns"

I did talk to the biologist last week and he did say that there weren't THAT many elk in this unit but they are there and do come out of the park.  He gave me a few starting spots but I am wondering now if I wasted my elk points? All I can do it put my time in and see what happens.

Putting your time in is all you can do now and hope for the best.  There are always big bulls in areas that get poached.  They are just hard to hunt.

I know the area rick is talking about but I have seen more Elk closer to the Wynoochee. From the Skok valley road to spider lake the indians hammer the Elk pretty hard if they are near the road. Get off the road and you will see more elk but it can be pretty rough country. Find some old maps, there are a lot of old grades that have been ditched out along with a few roads that have been reclaimed. I used to bear hunt this area alot.
I think there could be some good bulls to be had, but this area is going to be tough.
 Good luck with your tag.

As actionshooter said, the spider Lake, Pine Lake, Browns Creek area get hit hard by poachers and Indians all year round. Having said that, there are still elk to be found there. Follow the drainages into the darkest areas you can find away from the roads. Most of the questionable hunting is done on the loop from camp Govey around towards Browns Creek and back. There are many deep dark holes in there that will hold elk though. Last time I was up there we saw a herd of about 50 cows and spikes moving on a dead run like frieght train. We could hear them crashing brush for ten minutes after they were out of site. Amazing how fast they can move in that thick wet stuff.

Any bow hunters hunting this unit?  Today was my second day scouting the area around the N. Fork Skok and I have yet to see an elk, not too big a deal but I am wondering if I should switch my efforts over to the upper Wynoochee valley?  At least I have seen elk over there!  :) Anyway, any bow hunters or bear hunters out there?

A hunting buddy of mine works at the dam and power plant up there.  He said that the indians had hit the elk pretty hard last month and have taken most if not all of the biggest herd bulls. The Squaxins did the same with the herd out at Kamilche valley on August 1st. Good luck man!
