teanaway pack
« on: December 12, 2012, 04:33:06 PM »
Has there been any info on the estimated number of wolves in the teanaway?  I have been up looking for a bull the last few days and can't believe the amount of wolf tracks I have seen.   There were a bunch low on the middle fork, and at least 7 on Musser creek that went from the top to just above the private ground.

I was up there hunting during  early muzzeloader and had an encounter with what sounded like all  hell breaking loose, a bunch of wolfs started  houling about 100 yards from were I had set up a ground blind, sounded like at least 8 or 9 different wolfs going off for about 30 seconds then silence, I had set up in a remote bottom far away from any roads hunting deer, I thought it was a little odd that there wasent many deer in the area a small elk herd with a few bulls bugleing was in the area, they busted out of the bottom when the wolfs started houling, deer numbers are way down up there and only thing I could figure out was they had targeted the elk herd and they got busted of mabe they had a kill and were letting me know to stay clear, eather way it was one of those im getting out of here feelings.

Every deer we saw blew the country.  They were very nervous.  Here are a couple cell phone pics.

As we followed the wolf tracks it was amazing to watch a single wolf break out of line and follow each deer/elk track they crossed.  Checking to see if it was fresh enough to follow, if it wasn't the wolf was back in line with the others within 50 yards checking for fresher sign.  Lots of wolves in this country.  We saw sign from one end of the unit to the other in just over a 3 day span.

Its crazy how many of them there are.  I wish the Yaks would start hunting them.  I have a feeling PlatInd and I would be having fun right about now.

I heard something about there being one down off of Bullfrog Road in Roslyn not long ago and he was right by next to I-90 for all to see, had a collar on and everything.  Sheriff, WDFW, bunch of guys were there and had the road blocked off.  Some people saw it cleaning up on road kill there by the gravel pile where the DOT dumps them.

Wouldn't doubt it.  What infuriates me more than anything was these were there, 7 of them, two of them with collars, at least 3 years before they claimed there was a wolf pack there.

Yeah, when it comes to the wolves I don't believe anything wdfw has to say.  It is only a matter of time before they get a taste for buffalo :chuckle:
We left these tracks about 200 yards above the AFR gates off Ley rd.

Just curious...

Say I am out elk hunting and I run into a wolf or pack of wolves. If I feel I am in deep poo poo. What would happen if I shoot one with a collar and tell the game department I felt I was in fear of my life or in serious danger. Do you think that would fly? or would I end up behind bars and never hunt again? I realize they are federally protected, but I'm not cool with wolves. I am worried if I see one of these guys, that I am gonna panic and start blasting. They are very smart, and I am not trying to get flanked into a *censored* storm.

My dad and I were in the Teanaway for late muzzy any bull this past week.  Came across tracks of a pack of at least 6 wolves along Storm creek.  No elk or deer tracks anywhere.  Just wolves and turkey.  Maybe the only way our deer and elk will be saved is when the learn to fly.  Pretty disappointing to say the least. Do not agree with what WDFW is doing.  Just my honest opinion and I feel I can speak my mind as I pay big bucks for my license every year.

We're doing our best here in MT to keep them thinned out; but we can only do so much. Please take a road trip and bring plenty of ammo.

$350 for a NR tag is VERY steep.... They need to reduce the price on that sh$@  and there would be plenty of participation guaranteed.  :twocents:

No kidding Scotty.  I got to MT several times a year and would be more than happy to buy a wolf tag and go hunting.  It isn't going to happen at that price though.

If the tags were $31 like Idaho.... Or maybe $50, I would make sure everyone in my party would have one.

Unfortunately, those wolves are way more widespread up there than advertised. It's a sad deal, the teanaway is too beautiful to just stand by and watch the deer and elk herds get thinned out. Us sportsmen give the WDFW a lot of $ to manage the deer and elk populations. Something needs to happen quickly. A 12 month wolf season? :)
