I posted a legitimate question about getting the ball rolling on the "Lock the Gates" thread, but since nobody has answered it there, I'll ask here. What do we need to do, as a group of concerned citizens or as individuals, to get the ball rolling more than just on the pages of a forum? Who do we need to contact and with what information/proposal? WDFW? The Yakama Nation? Mule Deer Foundation? News media across the state? Other wildlife organizations? As an English teacher, I'd gladly offer my services to help revise/edit a blanket letter that HuntWA could send as a group with signatures attached, or that each of us can send to the parties it needs sent to. I don't have the means to donate money to a cause, but I can give my time.

just a question for lil red and time and any other native Americans following this post.. how much does any one family need to sustain for the winter? i have a family of five and we are hard pressed to eat an elk and deer if I'm lucky enough to harvest both in one season. and why not share harvest info with wdfw to sustain herds for future of all. why not have a season set for your user group. and limit your late season harvest while deer are breeding and wintering. trying not to bash anyone just questions.i teach my kids its not a right to hunt, but a privilege... maybe i can get a legit answer, maybe not!

That would include giving a pack or two away to extended family from time to time as well as using some for larger gatherings. Our bag limits are on a per househeld basis which causes challenges at times as they may be innadequate or liberal depending on the household. keep in mind the typical indian household is often much more complex than the majority society as it may be comprised of aunts, uncles, grand parents, adopted kids, homeless kids or extended familiy, etc... On average our per household allowable tags are probably less than what can legally be obtained through the state and although our season is typically 6 months long, you'll only find us hunting off Rez for about 3 of those months because we try to avoid the massacre that takes place from September through mid December. We do all of the above you mentioned. Although not all follow it, the fundamental principal of our regulations are "take only what u need to survive physically and spiritually" We also have a regulated designated hunter program that I participate in at times. This program gets abused by some, but we're working on cleaning it up.
sled take the emotion out of it! There are many including me and maybe you that if we had the opportunity to not have to buy store bought meat we wouldn't! but because of our status we do, are you really that upset to have to buy meat?

IM sick of hearing excuses for the abuse of the resources. Sorry about the emotion.
I can say that in other states with large bag limits, it is entirely possible for a family of 4 or 5 to consume 10 deer, 2 elk sized exotics, lots of rabbits/ducks/other birds and a couple wild hogs within a year. You can have all kinds of sausages, jerky and a variety of cuts of meat...eaten at multiple meals a day. I think a normal sized adult can eat a deer over 2 months. If a family is eating only one deer and elk over a year, my opinion is they aren't using the meat in every meal or are supplementing with other meat anyways.
