Rough weather any good?
« on: December 16, 2012, 07:07:55 PM »
Im thinking of heading out to Elma tomorrow morning. Anyone think with the nasty weather its worth hunting? My weather channel app says tomorrow is gunna be 32 as the low, 80% chance of rain and winds up to 35mph...

This is my first season of duck hunting. I've noticed that the birds move alot after a storm, but the weather tomorrow is gunna be a storm all day. So im not sure if its worth going out.

Only sheltered areas i know of are places i need my canoe to get to and its just too much work to get the canoe there... I can do the canoe alone out at Elma though.

I dont mind getting wet and cold, I can deal with that lol

This is really our first real storm. Usually moves the birds around a bit. I would hunt for sure.

Windy stormy weather is what you should be wishing for, particularly if you have areas of big water holding large numbers in the immediate area.  The birds will seek calmer areas....be there.

I would call in sick for work if it was guaranteed to blow 40 plus.  Those have been some of the most fun yet most frustrating hunts.  Lots of birds typically and the wind pushes them all over the place.  I hunted one day last year when we had gust up to 60 mph.  The birds would stand still in front of you at 30 yards and you had to place a 4’-5’ lead in front of them to knock them down.  You didn’t take a second shot as you would have to throw an 8’-10’ lead behind them to hit them after they flared.  It was pretty cool.  I watched one guy fire about 40 rounds and never even touched a bird even though they were in his face.  It can be a different type of shooting.  If you can find a back pocket that’s protected where the birds like, you may have some fun shooting.

A buddy of mine is out hunting this morning and already has 5 geese and 8 ducks, and he's not hunting near the big water.  Wind and weather make for some of the best hunts I've ever had!

Well I got SKUNKED today lol. Hunted Elma in the morning, No birds but a few high flyers. Then hunted a private field for the evening and got a couple birds to circle once then take off.

Weather was nasty! Sat through a few massive hail storms and a damn snow blizzard that lasted about 5 minutes lol. It was a fun day even though i didnt shot a single shell.
