R-15???

I've got one and its a solid rifle. Its basically a Bushmaster Varminter with a Remington stamp on it.

AND a remington paint job

Dpms/bushmaster/remington are all owned by the same big corp. The r-15 is good to go if you like the twist rate.

And don't forget, you can get a barrel with any twist rate you want once you own the rifle.

I have one in 18 inch, mine is stamped 1:8 twist. You should  not shoot 556 out of a 223. I have shot55 and 45 grain both shoot very well. want to try 69-77 grainers. Mine is right at 7.5 lbs with scope. Much lighter then my Oly arms K16. I like it and would buy another. I got mine for $900.00 at Cabelas about  2 months ago.

I can get the 18" or 20". The 20" is stainless little heavier but looks like it be more accurate. If I take the reg stock off and put a Bullpup collapsing stock I'd lighten it more and make it a little more versatile. Looks like I just need to go look at them for what's stamped on the barrel. Unless it says 5.56 I've always been told only shoot .223 in it.

My R-15 shoots both just fine! 

If it is stamped with both .223 And 5.56 then it's okay, Not all AR platform rifles have this ability and it's your responsibility to look at the manufacturers specs.

Basically the heavier the bullet you want to shoot the less twist rate on the barrel. My Varminter shoots 40 and 55 gr. bullets very well with a 1/9 rate but not so well on the heavier. The R-15 has a 1/8 rate and does not like the 40gr. As well but shoots the 55's and heavier better.

As far as barrel length I think you better stick to hunting or versatile. If for hunting go with the 20" barrel and leave the full stock, if you want versatile I would consider a completely different platform, one with a collapsable stock and 16" barrel.

Your killing me, 20" barrel it is. I was going to put the collapsible stock on it because my 7 year old can shoot it with a bipod or shooting sticks then. When you slam the stock all the way up it fits her shoulder really really well  I may have to see if I can find two of them, get the second with the 1:7 twist and 16" barrel. This could get spendy

My kids have no problem shooting the one in the picture, it's their favorite gun in the safe to shoot off the bench.
