Toledo Dec 21-31 Cow tag.
« on: December 20, 2012, 03:25:43 PM »
Enough about politics.  Lets get back to talking about hunting...
Anyone else draw this cow tag?  I am headed down tomorrow to try and fill my tag with a big fat cow.  Just curious if any other members might be down there.

Did you do any good finding a cow in the Toledo unit?  I was out Friday and saw 2 cows and 4 branch bulls.  Unfortunately the cows took off before I could get a shot.  Also went out Saturday and a few hours on Monday, but couldn't find an elk.  My cousin has the same tag and he only saw one group that was outside the boundaries.

Drew this tag last year and got lucky my first day out.  Having a hard time this year though!

Shot this cow today in Toledo.  She had hoof rot pretty bad on her front hoof.  She cut real clean and no other signs of her being sick.  Also went to WDFW website and reported it to them.

Congrats Crunchy!  Glad someone was able to find a cow in the unit.  I'm hoping to get back out on Friday.  Maybe my luck will change.  Congrats again.

went out one last time this morning, but couldn't find any elk.  I've seen a nice buck a couple of times though.

The worst part of the day was finding a 3x4 bull that had been killed and whoever shot it tried to cover it up with some limbs.  The bull had to have been shot within the last couple days because I was in the same place on Friday morning and didn't see it.  Very disappointing to see a beautiful animal wasted like that.  Especially sad since this was a permit area for master hunters.   I wish I knew who the shooter was so they could be held accountable.  Poor showing for the master hunter program for the person that shot the bull.

Ya that sucks. But I wouldnt necessarily blame the Master hunters. No shortage of poachers or just plain idiots around that would do something like that.

What makes you think a Master Hunter shot it?

Poaching is poaching, and you don't need a MH permit to poach......       :dunno: :dunno: :dunno: :dunno:

While it could have been anyone poaching it, there are a few reasons that make me lean toward a MH.
1)  The area was open for a permit hunt (antlerless) that only MH could apply for.
2)  If it was someone just poaching to shoot something, then why drag it across the road and try to cover it up instead of just leaving it lay and getting out of the area in a hurry?
3)  If it was someone poaching to get some meat, then why did they not go back and get it after dark?

My guess is someone saw an elk moving through the timber and didn't verify it was a cow or bull.  When they discovered it was a bull they tried to cover it up to avoid getting in trouble and losing their MH card.  I hope it wasn't a MH, but it's a good chance it was.

It could have been a MH. It could have been someone with a landowner permit. It could have been a target shooter who got careless, or some punk who just did it for the thrill. I wouldn't speculate. :twocents:

Nice job and congrats, Crunchy.
