Tell me about a Rem 700 7MM STW / Sendero
« on: December 22, 2012, 09:09:32 PM »
Very curious. I have a few magnums, but always go to the wife's .270 when I use a rifle.

I would like to have a "Long Range" gun, and really like these rifles.

My questions are what is the Sendero? Is it from the factory with any "goodies?"

I always see the same looking gun when I look at them (as far as stocks, colors etc). Last 3 i have looked at have HS precision stocks (don't recall the ones prior).

Just curious as $1K seems to be the norm for a used Sendero....
Just curious...
Thanks.

I bought one about a decade ago, and it's still in AR. I purchased it in 7mmUltra Mag. What I remember it having was a heavy contour barrel, it was stainless with a matte finish, and had barrel flutes. Was also bedded into a grayish splatter type looking stock. Hope that helps. Been a long time since I seen it.

I have owned many Sendero's and have probably shot 10,000 plus rounds easily through .300 Win Mag Sendero's over the years. I purchased my first .300 Win mag Sendero back in 96. The Sendero is basically your "Long Action" varmint weight rifle. I have owned them in .300 Win Mag, 7mm Stw, 25-06, .300 Weathery, 300 Ultra Mag. All but several were the matte black standard in the aluminum block HS-Precision stock. All were great performers with handloads. I set my personal best record for Rockchucks here in WA with a .300 Win Mag Sendero, 180gr Nosler Ballistic Tip on top of IMR 4831. For a total of 176 Groundhogs/Chucks in one spring/summer.

The .300 Win Mag with the 180 BT combo was wicked messy on Chucks. Depending on the angle, you learned in a hurry where to aim as to get Chuck "Aerials" that were out of this world. Nothing like a Chuck being launched 20 plus feet in the air like the Apollo Moon Shot, while spinning like a top. A aerial ballistic yards sale per say, crap everywhere. I LOVED IT!

In other words, they are great rifles.

It's a lot of gun for the dough. Most can be good shooters either out of the box or with minimal love......and they are easy to sell.

Not far off what I was thinking.
Guess I'll buy a beat ol 700, and make my own new hot road 700.
Seems for a grand I could get a barrel, stock and trigger of my choice for fairly close...

Either way thanks fellas.

As long as you are not in a hurry. You can get a stock like the sendero used for $200-250 and a tube will go $350-450 plus the work. The killer is waiting on a tube and then the smith......if you are gonna spin up a tube, you might as well true up the action....and nobody wants to guarantee accuracy in a stock they didn't bed......$$$$$

.........or you can buy a lathe, jigs, fixtures, mics, gauges and reamers for about $20g's and build a bunch of them. It will save you about $350 each.

Depends on the Smith. Some of them are sticking it to people quite good. I stay away from smiths that just do complete builds and stay away from any other work on rifles. I don't care what their excuse is, it's like dealing with building contractors that don't want to come on a job and get paid a hourly rate for hourly work. They want to give a number for the whole thing and would rather you not be around when they did it. I've sent three contractors a$$'s down the road in the past 4 months untill I found one willing to give a days work for a days pay. Do the research and check pricing, remember  smith works for you. He is paying his bills and playing with your and others money. Just like anyone else, some how in the past two to three years. I've been catching a bit of a attitude from some smith's I have talked to spread out across the country.

They seam to have the attitude of , send me your money and ill get to it when I get to it. Basically the attitude of they are doing you a favor. Screw those type of smith, I have 4 smiths I've stuck with over the years. 5 others smiths I had build rifles and will never deal with them again. I've had to send new builds to other smiths just to get the work right. I've had smiths instal a 7mm Vais Arms brake on a .300 Win Mag complete tactical build Rem700, McM A5, Krieger. After shooting the rifle and figuring it out after nothing making it to the target and the guy next to me getting "Spattered" next to me on the bench. I called the smith and he acted annoyed and would repair it but wanted shipping. Hahahah!

I had another smith do another brake and install it, paid the smith. Then sent my original smith the bill. Of course I never heard from the original smith but I proved my point.

That is one of my character flaws, being able to say "good enough". I was told that Al biesen was at one time buying up all of his earliest works because they were not of the quality of the later stuff, I was afraid of that myself and vowed never to sell any work that was not as good as could be expected anywhere. I wish I could get passed the fact that never will a job be "perfect"....the smith can always find his flaw. I would much rather it be a chuck mark that can be blasted out or a chip in the perfect bedding than a damn brake being off centerline or too tight.....lol.
