if you jump a blacktail
« on: December 25, 2012, 05:57:18 PM »
If you jump a blackie...
1. Should you hang there for awhile...will they come back around?
2. Will that be a place to post up in the future, or will they leave it alone after they are jumped?

I jump 2 today but left them alone after...so, they just got up and kinda skipped off. Will they be there tomorrow?
Pleas advise....I've been trying to figure these guys out for 4 yrs. Now...starting to get embarrassing and definately more difficult to justify buying equip. To my wife!

Thanks for any help in advance and Merry Christmas!

Blacktails won't blow out of the country. Chances they will be within a mile or so.

I don't believe a blacktail will leave the country unless its heavily pressured and pursued. However you just educated them, and they will be tougher to find in the future, but my guess is they will still be there.

if its a buck he will just hit the thick stuff and wait for you to make another mistake. watch the wind and set up cameras to see they are doing. if you keep jumping them in one spot find out why they prefer that spot over others.

Its been my experience that they will usually run 80-100 yards and stop if they are in timber our reprod. I have killed many blacktails by jumping them and listening were they go. I head for where they went and try to see them before they takeoff. If I jump them again, I just repeat the process until I get a shot or they blowout of the area. Some of them get curious and will stand there while you are stalking up to them. Most of the blacktails I have killed have been at less than 40 yards.

When you jump them the hunt starts again. Don't figure they are gone. Slow down, work the wind, use your binocs, keep working the deer. You may get a shot later.... Make this single deer your hunt.

Cut 100 yds downwind real quickly, sometimes you'll catch them circling back to get behind you.

All good points here...

While I haven't done it with archery gear, I have with rifle and pistol before... Jump them, then let them settle again. Go where they were and look at what gave you up from where you were spotted/winded. Learn from it. They'll move to something that probably gives just the same opportunity. Super quietly, circle beyond where they went, playing the wind and views. Try to get the upper ground and work in once you see them.

How close are the deer when you jump them? I think you are "hunting" too quickly...  Read Boyd Iversons Black tail trophy tactics 2 It will enlightne you a BUNCH about BT deer.

ok...what happened was a truck came by and I stopped to look at them pass, took a step and busted...they were 60 yards north, up wind and gently trotted off into the wind, not looking, but had their ears pointed my way...it wasn't the truck that got em up, I know...they were bedded ten ft below the upper edge of a large bowl I was working around I think the truck piqued their attention then they heard/saw me...yes, I was probly working a little too fast too...best darn hunt I've had in 4 years though...Hopefully better conditions in a bout an hour cuz im headin back out.

When in the heart of hunting, I think its best to move REALLY slow. take a step, look around, step, look around. I also like ot make bigger movements when there is another noise to cover mine up if i have to do something...
