What should I know? Update w/ pics
« on: December 27, 2012, 04:17:50 PM »
Westie here, and am going to try pheasant (and maybe waterfowl) hunting near Spokane. I am looking at the Go Hunt maps, and it seems that there are a few places to go so I shouldn't have a problem of finding a place to go. My question is  should I try going to one of the places that I have to get written permission, or should I go to a release site  :dunno: .....or is it even worth pheasant hunting in the snow (I have never hunted pheasant in the snow)  :dunno:

Also, is there anything extra that I need to know about hunting pheasant in the snow  :dunno:

Any help is appreciated

i would try and find a place to get permission from. some of the release sites tend to dump all their leftover birds just after thanksgiving and release sites always get hit hard cause everyone knows about them. hunting in the snow can really work to your advantage because from my experiences the birds seem to hold a bit tighter thus giving you easier shots. good luck and cant wait for some pics, i havent been out since opening weekend and am living vicariously through others trips  :bash:

Dress warmly, walk slowly.  Birds are jumping very close in some spots with quail a bit more prevalent so load one barrel with quail load. Pick release sites and written permission sites based on cover and habitat available (food). It is mostly a wash now, IMO.   Birds are more rare but fatter. Look for warming spots like big rock flats and push your dog to the tracks. Ground hunters will be fun to watch and get frustrated as the birds snow wash themselves. Be ready! Good luck!

There is some CRP down by St. John.  I havent ever hunted there but it is "feel free to hunt" land.  There is lots of land down by Tekoa to hunt but it is all private land so you should knock on some doors.
I love bird hunting in snow, the birds hold better and you can see the tracks.  Bring a rifle so you can kill some Coyotes as well!

Hawthorne thickets is where they are when the snow pushes them out of the fields.  Saw 100's of birds last weekend.

Thought I'd also add to be sure and show some class by not shooting road roosters.  It really pisses of the landowners when there is snow on the ground.

Well..........I had a great time  :IBCOOL: :IBCOOL: :IBCOOL: I only got 2 partridge and a quail, but it was a blast! I seen about 75 pheasant, yet only 4-5 roosters :P , 30 partridge, and 15-20ish quail.  The pheasant were not holding tight at all...especially the roosters it seemed  :chuckle: :bash: We also had about 5 chances at some rabbits, but they dart fast and disappear  :yike: Seen 5 yokes, and was going to shoot 1, but I seen a rooster dart into the brush 5 minutes before. Never got back to him because he darted to unhuntable land, and by then the yote was gone  :P Oh! And I got to see my first porky in the wild  :yike: Ya I know I should have shot it, but I forgot a knife  :bash: Oh well. I just got done eating, and they were way better than duck  :chuckle:  I was very pleased with Kola being only her second or third time hunting upland, and first time in the snow  :IBCOOL: :IBCOOL:

And they are my first partridge, and quail :whoo:
