what scope shoud i get?
« on: December 28, 2012, 11:10:58 AM »
So for christmas the girlfreind got me the 300 rum remington model 700 sendero that I've been wanting but I can't figure out what scope I want.

I want it to have the custom cartridge specific turrets
Some good zoom and a 50 mm bell

I've been looking at leupold or vortex but any help or advice would be greatly appriciated

What are you looking to spend? I think you are thinking right. Leupold, vortex and nightforce would be top of my list.

Hard to beat the VXIII 6.5-20 X 50mm with target turrets (that can be changed out for custom dial turrets). Affordable, great company and product, cheap dials, and LOCAL!

I've got the 6-24x50 Vortex Viper PST moa ffp on my RBros 7mag and so far it tracks perfect and the glass is pretty dang good.

The only problem is I don't know if they currently offer cartridge specific turrets.  I don't want to hijack the thread but why not go to a MOA or MIL dial?

Nightforce if you can afford the $1,700 price tag.  I have a buddy with your set up (.300RUM Sendero) that he topped with a Nightforce.  He loves it.  I have seen him whacking sillouettes at 1,200 yards, and he shot his bull at 800+ this year.
If you can't swing the cost of the NF, I would go with the Leupold.  I have a Rem 700 in 7mm Mag with a Leupy VXIII and target turrets.  I love it, but I max out at 800 yards.   :twocents:

My buddy (the guy with the NF) looked at my rig, nodded quietly and said "Yeah, this is a nice starter set up".   :chuckle:

Haha I wish I could afford the night force but I'm trying to keep it $1000 or less give or take a little bit. I'm thinking leupold but just can't make up my mind

I have the 338rum Sendero setup with a vortex pst and am very happy with it for the price.  I personally use moa on it and has tracked very good but have only stretched it to 750 yards so far.

Check out the Sightron SIII line of scopes. The glass has been exceptional on all of the examples (4) I've looked through. I have an 8-32x56 with the LRMOA reticle and it is optically better, to me, than either of the Leupold Mk 4 scopes or any of the VX-3 scopes I've had. Having turrets which match the reticle is a big plus for me. You either need MIL turrets or a MOA reticle. There's just no reason not to when you spend over $800 on a scope.

If you got up to $1000, get the VX3 4.5-14; you will not regret it. My buddy has the Vortex Viper in 6.5-20. He seems to like it, but the scope appears very large on the gun to me. The vortex is easier on the pocketbook... if you want a real steal, the Redfield 4x12 is excellent and owned by Leupold; I've hunted with it for the past few years in many different climates and it performs great. But, my preference would be the VX3.

Id say it depends mostly on the overal type of gun your wanting, all of the above are great..if ya want a heavy gun go for the super high end,if your tryn to pack your rifle id prolly avoid some of those two pound scopes

Take a good look at the Leupold VX-6.  I'd go VX-6 3x18x50.

I know a guy who topped his 300rum with a Huskemaw.  He's pretty happy with it.
I just talked to another buddy of mine who bought himself the Leupy LRT for Christmas.  Hasn't put it on yet, but he's pretty excited.  He works with a guy that contracts out teaching tactical shooting classes and I think he got it at a deep discount, so I am not sure what he paid for it.

The MOA/mil is sound advice. It doesn't take long to use, is adaptable to any gun, is accurate at all weather and elevations and easier to sell if you are not happy.

I've been eye balling it for a long time. I can't find any info on this model its a remington model 700 in 300 rem ultra mag with a bowl barrel and a overmolded lamenated stock. I was told it was a limited edition sendro from the gunsmith buddy that the gf  bought it from but idk. It is a very smooth and nice shooting gun lots of props for the girlfreind for this one hahaha

Do yourself a favor and learn to think in MOA and go with an M1 elevation knob instead of a CDS.

I would do a bit of reading, a mildot with mil or moa turrets is super handy on a hunting rig. It allows ranging, hold overs and windage corrections.

I'm looking into the Vortex PST 4-16 Front Focal Plane scope with the EBR-1 MOA reticle. Everything I have read about it shows excellent reviews.

You can send that scope to Leupold and have them install the turret.  Make yourself a drop chart then making extended range hits is just a turn of the dial once you are practiced up.

Moa is fairly easy to understand. I am also on the bandwagon of using moa turrets instead of custom calibrated... I do have a custom calibrated one on my 7mm but will only use that to about 600 yards and I can estimate corrections based on environmental conditions.
Once you learn moa I am confident you will see the advantages.as.well.
I just.ordered a vortex viper PST ffp 6-24x50 moa for my 300 rum!
