Idaho Reg?
« on: December 28, 2012, 03:21:39 PM »
I have been reading over the Idaho regulations and am hoping to get some confirmation in regards to general season archery elk.  So, when applying I need to select an "A" tag or "B" tag depending on the time frame I want to hunt, is that correct?   Second, I need to select a zone and once I have selected that zone I can only hunt that area unless I change it before the season starts, is that correct?  I think that does it for now, I will probably have more once I try figuring out the draws  :chuckle: Thanks!

For a general tag their is no draw. Just paying out of state license and tag; dont remember the price off the top of my head?
Pick a zone which will tell you what units you are allowed to hunt in with that tag. A tag is the early archery only tag, B tag is the any weapon tag a couple of weeks later.  Hope this helps...

That does help.  Just to clarify, once the season starts I am committed to that one zone?

Yeah that is how ive always known it. Different zones and AorB tags may have different seasons/units/rules so you are commited to that zone. Depending on what zone you choose, make sure to double check your A vs B tags. Some zones will have an early archery "B" tag that is an option, ...but its to confusing to explain unless your lookin at the regs.

My advice without making it confusing is to apply for a LE tag that you would be interested in. Most LE units are wayyy better elk hunting whether your lookin for horns or meat..cost $14.75 for non residents to put in. If you do not draw research which zone you are most interested in hunting and go from there.

This may have already been answered but I this is my thoughts.  And "A" tag is for generally the Archery Hunters hunting during the Archery season.  They are so well organized and lobby so well they pretty much have the 'Rut' wrapped up as their season.  Inside that "A" tag there are some special early rifle seasons and a late ML season.  "B" tag is generally considered a rifle season tag but it actually is a 'any approved weapon' season.

Second, I need to select a zone and once I have selected that zone I can only hunt that area unless I change it before the season starts, is that correct?

The zone you select locks you in the management units in that zone for that animal.

Call the Idaho Game Dept and ask them instead of asking on here.

It's fine to ask here. That's what this forum is for.

If I had questions about Idaho hunting, this is the first place I would go. Well, after checking the IDFG website first, of course.

Blackhorn, did you have any more questions?

Because, we don't live in Idaho and people give you their take on the rules/laws. I never take anybody's word for anything.

The "A" and "B" tags overlap to an extent. Example: in the Panhandle Zone an A elk tag is valid for archery from September 6-30, and for "Any Weapon" October 25-29. The B tag is valid for archery from September 6-12 and "Any Weapon" October 10-24.

The A tags favor archery and muzzleloader hunters, while the B tags favor modern firearm hunters. However, your specific hunt dates may cause you to choose one over the other.

You cannot change once you have made your purchase.

Thanks for the input guys, I really appreciate it!  You all answered my questions nicely!  Campmeat, I understand not taking anyones word for anything, but it is nice to be able to chat with guys that have been there and done that.  Now, when I do call fish and game I can spend less time on talking over all the regulations and more time on getting down to stuff that I really want to know like the GPS location of a 350 bull.  ;)

Don't worry, asking questions is ok and helpful on here. I even ask one sometimes.

Bob did a much better job at explaining it than me. My repy didnt explain it the way I had intended.

I live on the Idaho/Washington state line and have hunted Idaho every year since I was old enough. I spend alot of time laying boot track in Washington and Oregon which is why I enjoy this site.  But I will help guys with Idaho hunting as much as I can.

My  :twocents: is still to put in for a LE tag and go from there. Do you know if you are wanting to hunt in the North or South end of the state yet?

Bone, I am leaning towards the west side more or less in the middle .   Maybe McCall area.  I will probably buy a tag for that unit and when I get a chance to scout I will be able to determine if that is the area I want to commit too or not.

To put in for the Limited Entry Draw, I need to buy my Idaho license and pay the $14 LE fee.  If I don't draw the LE Tag...can I get my License money refunded back?

Last year I planned on hunting Idaho no matter what.  I drew a good LE elk tag in the Southeast, and had a great hunt.  However, this year if I don't draw a LE tag in Idaho, I will hunt in Montana.   Can I get my money refunded?

No, they do not refund the hunting license fee.

That's one of the reasons it's relatively easy to draw hunts in Idaho.

It cuts down on the number of people applying because they don't get a point for their license fee, and the license is nonrefundable.

Also, correct me if I'm wrong, but in ID you can only select one special permit drawing for moose, sheep, goat, elk and deer.  That also changes odd substantially.

Yes you can only select on of the three trophy species or deer and elk.

So you can apply deer and elk OR one of the big three, or just ONE of the whole bunch?

You can do deer AND elk at the same time when you apply for LE tags; but if you choose to put in for Sheep, Moose, or Goat (considered once in a lifetime tags) you can only put in for one species and not allowed to put in for others for that year.

For a born whitetail and elk fanatic, I must say Goats have so far been the most awesome hunting expeirence I have ever had in Idaho though. Somthing to think about.
