Hands down Subaru Outback. I love ours.

What kind of actual mileage are you getting?

just got our 2011 about 1 month ago. 3 fill ups so far. 24, 23, and 24 so far.

We owned one for a while and always got 24-26. I will never own one again after the head gasket issues.

My folks have a Suzuki all wheel drive car that gets in the low 30s. Like Gasman said, I think the Escape would be a good option. They are a pretty good daily driver, or can go to the mountains with the family.

I had an AWD Subaru Legacy a few years ago.  It cost less than the Outback and still had AWD.  Not the best rig for hauling an elk home from Idaho.

Audi A4 23city/30hwy
Lexas IS 250 21/29
Mercury Milan 20/29
Subaru Impreza, Legacy, Outback 20/27  Forester 20/22
Volvo S40, S60 19/28
Suzuki SX4 23/31

My favorite is the A4.  I want a WRX or Lan EVO, but they get slightly worse mileage.

Nothing with all wheel drive is going to get good milage compared to 2 WD.  Nothing AWD with decent mileage will be a good hunting rig.

My mom has been really happy with her Honda CRV. It is all wheel drive, and she gets mid 20's. She has driven it over all the passes during winter with good tires without problems. I would recommend Honda, Nissan or Subaru. Each company offers suvs that are all wheel drive and offer low to mid 20's mpg. You will not find a 30+ awd car that will also give you room for your dogs and let you travel off the pavement far.

My wife's next car will be a Acura MDX, good mileage AWD SUV that's reliable and not a fortune to maintain.

Just turned in our Toyota RAV4 after a 3yr lease.  Got mid 20's mpg.  Good groud clearance.Great in snow.Smallest car I know of with third row seating.  And they are cheap if you stick to the base model.

I had an Audi A4 with the 1.8T that got easily 30 average, up to 33 highway. Also had a Subaru wrx that only got about 20 average. I think VW has some all wheel drive diesel cars? That Audi was my all time favorite car.

My step dad has an older MDX and launches his boat with it each year.... Buries it to the frame, but he lives on the lake so it is a short trip....
