Looking to find some blacktail sheds.
« on: January 01, 2013, 02:43:21 PM »
As this has been my first year hunting it will also be my first year trying to find sheds. As I understand it, February is a good time to start looking? Also, I'm assuming I'd want to focus on core rut zones with a lot of rubs in the area to find sheds? how bout using a dog? I've got a golden retriever with a hell of a nose on her and I think she could help if I can find a shed to help her learn the scent. that's assuming its not illegal to use dogs to shed hunt?

Thanks for any info,

Drew

You can use a dog, but its much more satisfying finding them yourself

Blacktail dont have wintering areas since theres not much snow on the west side correct? If so I would just focus on where your seeing bucks between now and february then hit those areas hard.

I actually find it far more satisfying having the dog find them.  :twocents:

A dog would be great. I am starting to think shed hunting may have been what wore out my hips...

I'll take my dog. She loves the adventure and could probably use the excersise. Haha. As far as where I've been seeing bucks...I've only seen one, and it was a spike with a doe eating someone's nice grass in front of thier big arse house. haha. I do however know where there are some fresh rubs so perhaps I'll start there.
