Out of state Cougar hunt info
« on: January 01, 2013, 08:04:04 PM »
I have started a search for my dad for an out of state hound hunt for a cat. Anyone know of an outfitter?  He would like to kill a bigger Tom. He is curious on if you pay the price if you are required to kill the first cat put in a tree or are you able to pass on a smaller cat in hope of killing a good one. Any information would be helpful.

I wonder if they tree one and say its over tho. Is their job to put one in a tree and if its below your standards it's to bad?

I sent him a PM and never heard back. Sound familiar. Maybe I am being punished for not getting back to you.

A good friend of mine used to guide in Idaho and if the customer paid for a two, three, or five day hunt, then that's what they got.  Didn't matter how many they treed.  If they didn't get a cat he gave them a significant discount to come back the next season.

He doesn't guide anymore.  He gave it up after he lost two bear dogs to grizzly bears, and his best cat strike dog to wolves.  Said it's not worth it to even try anymore.

I have two freinds who guide cougar hunts for buckshot outfitters. I dont know of any outfitter who would not let you turn down a lion and keep hunting for your week or whatever your hunt time was. I think he charges a fee for the hunt and then the rest only if you shoot one. Pretty good deal. out of naples idaho

I'd send another PM to Bearpaw if I were you. I figure he's probably been pretty busy up to now but it should start slowing down for a bit until turkey season opens up.

In the snow the guide will have a good idea of the cat -probably even know which cat it is by the track - and won't turn out the dogs on a questionable track unless they just want to do a chase.

I'd suppose with the addtl risk of wolves, I'd not turn the dogs out on a small track just for a chase unless the dogs needed work  :dunno:
