This morning I walked into the Alpine Lakes Wilderness about 4 miles. I arrived up over 5000 feet up on the ridge and was walking along the beautiful meadows.. Up front I heard some marmots whistling. The funny thing is that the marmots could never possibly have been alerted to me just yet. I was out of sight. So I chambered a round in my rifle and scanned around as I continued along. I walked about 20 yards and off to my left I saw some black movement. It was a bear eating blueberries on the hillside. This bear was only 200 yards away from the other bear I shot about 10 days ago with my longbow. What a treat. Surely a good spot.

This bear was about 100 yards away from me. I stalked her until I was about 60 yards away. She was facing uphill away from me at this point. I set my rifle on the rocks and waited to get a good shot. I waited a while and finally became impatient. Around my neck I had a production bearmanric call that I just picked up. I don't normally use calls but I really liked this new call because it is so easy to get many different sounds out of. Anyway I gave her two short toots and she stood up and looked my direction. I waited until she went down on all fours and then she went broadside facing downhill. I nailed her and she cartwheeled down the hillside into a tree.

The work began. It was cool because my good friend Pacyew was only about 10 minutes away. He was deer hunting with his longbow. He heard my shot and was certain it was me and a bear. Knowing for sure that I would be watching that hillside like a hawk. We skinnned her out and the meat looks good.

Anyway she's a little bear. About 150 lbs. I am ok with that and her hide looks real good. All black.

Congrats!!!

It's a good feeling to get it back to the rig and even better when all the meat is processed and in the freezer and the hide is at the taxidermist.

Congrats! How are you getting away from all the hikers up there?? I have been way off the trail and it seems I'm always bumping into hikers in the Apline lakes area. Look forward to seeing the pictures.

Sweeeet!! Great job on the bear! Gotta love them friggin marmots. Even when they chew the hell out of your hat at night after you leave it outside the tent

The next one I will get with my longbow. I think next year probably. There's a large one up there... It was good to connect even on such a small bear.

Congrats on the Bruin!!!! Gonna try with a long bow huh...THat is really cool. I have saw a few this year that could have been taking with one. Some way to close for comfort but thats how it goes....Congrats again!!!! Justin

Ray is that you with the bear up in the picture?

If so i am the guy who was "hiking" with my wife (and of course my .45 and bear tags..that's right) up in the lakes area on Friday and gave you that the smoked pork sandwich on the way down the mountain. Write back to me or send me a P.M.

To funny-- Congrats on the bear though boss, that's fricken sweet and the effort to get her out of there, you guys earned all that!!

great going Ray. i tried to get my first bear with a bow compound. but it was trained and my bear mentor Leo parrot from olympic archery said it was 45-70 time. my next three bear's were with a bow. that was back in the late 80's. i was getting into traditional archery then hurt my neck. you did great. and were you got it was a great challenge awsome. keep it up. Rick

GOOD JOB RAY, we need to kill more of them, i think there getting so thick after they shut down hounds and baits that there actually starting to eat more and more of our deer. they have no fear of man or dog anymore.
