.264 Win mag build questions
« on: January 04, 2013, 08:11:39 AM »
I have always wanted a .264 win mag, and would rather build one so I can get a longer barrel. My question is what is the best action to start with? I have read tons on the internet about this caliber vs. others that are similar, and still want build one. I would rather have my question answered then go through all the same rhetoric about which caliber is better like the other sites. The discussion about which is better seems to always prevent the question from being answered. Thanks!

Build it off of a Remington or Remington custom clone.  This will give you the most options for trigger, bases, etc.

  :yeah:

But if you want to do the work all on your own you could do it on a Savage.
After the first shot the rest are just noise.

Just one example, there is a whole world of Remington clone actions out there that range across a wide price spectrum. Stiller makes a quality action and at the price, it adds up to be about the same as if you were having all the custom work done to a Rem700 action during your build. Such as bolt fluting, Sako extractor, bolt handle, truing Etc.

This is one of my actions here(Rem700) that has had a bunch of work done to it. Benchmark Barrels trued it and installed a Sako extractor. Kampfeld Custom TI bolt fluted it, added the "Hunter" bolt knob and opened the base holes to 8-40. If not for the fact that I really like the look, fit and feel of the Remington 700 I would have just gone with a Stiller or such and had about the same invested in either when done.

Thanks for the responses, those are some cool looking actions and rifles. They are way out of my price range however. I was hoping to do a little more of a budget build, do you guys have more advice for a cheaper build?

Go long action Remington SPS, find a quality barrel, have your smith true it up, spin her on and your there!

A budget build just screams Savage to me. Hit the pawn shops and look for a used Savage in any long action caliber (270, 30-06, 7mm or 300 Mag). I wouldn't pay more than $275 for one. Put a new trigger on it ($50-$100), stock ($200-$700), and a prefit barrel ($250-$600). Now you're good to go!

If you order a barrel now, the rifle will be ready to roll in time for bear season this summer.

I like to work with the savages and have a great feeling after one of my rifles shoots really well.
Like the others said if you want to do some of your own work to keep the cost lower go for a savage, they actually are pretty good actions and if you ask a smith who if not to partial either way he will tell you that the newer Remingtons are more work to true and square than the savages. once you have the action get good components to use and you'll have a great rifle. don't think that there are not many options for savages either, lots and lots of people tear apart and build on them all the time.

really it comes down to how much money, what you like to shoot action wise and how much you want to be involved

I custom built one on a pre 64 model 70 action. 28 inch barrel . After a lot of research and time at the range i found a perfect load that is a tack driver. 6.5 is a great bullet being long and skinny  for several reasons which i wont get into. Unless you have an absolute fetish for this overbore capacity barrel burner there are much better choices for you to build a custom rifle on.
