ultra or short?
« on: January 04, 2013, 06:52:18 PM »
the elk committee in moses lake are needing a gun for a board game at the annual banquet.  should we get a short mag or ultra mag in 7 or 300?  or does it really matter?  we want to of course sell out the board and also give the winner a nice prize.  thanks,  mike w

If you took a poll of 100 shooters I think it would go 51 for the 300, and 49 for the 7. Short is a little more popular than Ultra in a 300.

The recoil difference favors the short. The velocity difference is negligible.

.300 WSM

Most people can handle 300 WSM recoil. .300 WSM DEAD or .300 Ultra REAL DEAD.

I agree on both counts although I see the primary advantage of the Ultra as flatter trajectory more than increased energy/killing effectiveness.  :twocents:

300 Short.  Why give away a gun most won't enjoy shooting?  That is if they can afford ammo for it!  I'd bet more interest would be created with the 300 short vs 7 or .30 Ultra.  That's the name of the game in this case, isn't it?
He asked, Do you ever give a short simple answer?  I replied, "Nope."

The ultra mag will kill stuff more deader. I'd go that route.
