I tell anyone thinking about a big gun like the ultra to find someone and shoot them first. See what they feel like and how you shoot them. Most people out there have no need or reason to need a ultra or super mag.

The last friend that was talking having a big 30+ magnum came over and was talking options with me. I told him before you get crazy and drop 3-4k why don't you shoot a few of mine :chuckle: Let's just say he went to a 7mm mag instead.

Kinda wish I would have let him build it and then bought it from him when he found out he did not like it :chuckle: I try to be a better friend then that :chuckle:

300 Wsm if a kid or woman wins it will be a good gun. Mild recoil and can put elk down hard. it would be a good gun for anyone that wins. I have a buddy that shoots one he loves it. My wife has the 300 wm and i shoot the ultra. all do the same to the animals. but the ultra is a beast but its a hellofa good time shooting it.

Hell, if you want horsepower, toss a 416 meteor in the mix. I would buy a 375 ultra.....if more guys knew the accuracy potential of the 375......it would be the new elk master.

The .375 Ultra is the most accurate of the ultra mags I have shot, 3 of them have been spooky accurate. The first three rounds with hand loads I had used in the two prior .375 Ultra's . Shot .375 at 100 yards in the current one.

Now it's getting interesting!
Serious elk calibers start at 338, and get better as you go up!

300 ultra mag hands down.  Give the short mag to the women and children.

And give a 30-06 to all the guys who buy an Ultra mag and realize that they can't afford to shoot it, and that they can't handle it. Then they never shoot it enough to actually become proficient with it, and go cripple game animals at 600+ yards. :bash:

That's then down side to the Ultra, it takes a pretty serious commitment to learn to shoot them well.

For me? 3 shots to zero the scope! :chuckle:

My rule when I teach people to shoot, is that they need to be able to hit my 8" steel gong 10 for 10 from a field position. Whatever range you can accomplish this at is what I consider their max range. If they can only do that at 50 yards, then they are proficient at 50 yards. If you can run that at 1000 yards, then that's your range.

It's just important to understand that the "proficiency range" changes from gun to gun. I don't care if they can shoot a perfect score with a 243 at 600 yards. That doesn't mean you can do it with the Ultra mag at that range!

Good threshold you posted.

When I first purchased my 300rum, I sighted the gun in...then returned to the woods each weekend for quite some time. Proficiency in my case was a single first shot. Had to be withing 3" of center at 300 yards. My choice for me was that 300 yard max. Some days I would drive out, take out a target and the gun, one shot on my 300 yard range. In the snow or on a 100 degree day. One shot trip.

Obviously the gun is able to do much more, but when I can tip beer cans at 300 yards, for me, I consider this proficient.

It's kind of a sick obsession we ultra mag owners have.  I got the 338 RUM and my shoulder is bruised after a session at the range, but I always come back for more and I am most confident with that rifle.  There is just something about the power I love!

And reloading is a must with ultra mags!!!

It's purely a cost saving measure. 300 RUM ammo is $45-75 a box.
