Deadman Creek Outfitters Windmill Project Management
« on: January 05, 2013, 12:30:21 AM »
Deadman Creek Outfitters out of Pomeroy have been gradually leasing more land in 163 and 162 GMUs. They are charging an annual membership fee of $800, plus a 4 day deer hunt fee of $1475 for members (non members $1875). This year they were in charge of issuing permission to hunt in the windmill project (Pomeroy side), on behalf of Puget Sound Energy. This year I called and left 2 messages to get info, etc. I got no call back, so I decided I would drive 6 hours across the state and show up in person. I show up 6 weeks prior to the season and was told to come back 2 weeks prior to the season opener to get my permission slip. Apparently I was too early. I went ahead and registered online to save time and came back 2 weeks prior; as instructed. When I arrived he was out hunting for the day and HE IS THE only person qualified to hand out permission. Permssion consists of watching a safety video and signing a slip with your vehicle info. It takes about 10 minutes to do. I was then told to come back a day or two prior to the season opener. This would mean I would now be in a long line of people. PSE and Deadman Creek Outfitters encourage hunters to register long in advance, scout, etc. How can I scout the area if I have to get permission to hunt first and this guy is always out hunting? I spoke to a number of other hunters onsite, who were also very frusterated with the management. One mentioned he did speak with Mr. Deadman Creek Outfitter owner, but he was more intrested selling him a membership and charging him to hunt. He was also told it was too early and to come back. Based off what I have heard and experienced first hand. I beleive he purposly not given out permission or giving out a limited number of slips to try and keep the land for himself and his members. He is using this as a tool to draw people in to try and sell memberships and trophy hunts. I am curious to hear any hunt Wa members experience with this guy. Personally I think he is a fraud. I will be scheduling a meeting with the game department and PSE to voice my experience. Lucklily I hunt private land and tagged out on opening day. We were hoping to hunt the area as a plan B later in the season.

Hunting has gotten away from the traditions of old. 25 years ago we could walk anywhere and hunt, as long as it was not posted. Now all the land is getting posted up or leased out, so an outfitter can charge hunters to hunt. I have zero issue with outfitters making money, but Deadman in particular has plenty of property around Coulfax and north of Pomeroy to hunt. Now they are moving into the blue mtn. foothills and leasing out land. Plus Puget Sound Energy confided in them to hand out permission slips to access the windmill project. They managed it poorly, which ultimately means less ground for the public to hunt. It is basically a double whammy to the public and getting worse by the year. IMO- the game department should lease the land, or at least have control over the windmill project hunting access for the public. They are the ones, which manage the game and the hunters. If they don't have the money to start leasing land, then they better come up with more creative ways of making $ to do so. Otherwise many hunters will just bag hunting in Wa and head out of state. If I have to pay to hunt, just to shoot an average deer or elk; see you later Wa.

Bingo! Bad enough boneville gave the Umatillas Robinette, now ya gotta deal with useless windmills. Who's power bill went down due to these anyway?

There's another group leasing  land for pay to play hunting outside pomeroy now too.  Well not now, they've been at it a few years now. I know they've got a bunch locked up on Sweeney gulch road. This would be in the 178 unit. Makes it tough to get permission from people who used to let us hunt.

Don't fall into the trap. Hunting is-and always will be- about the hunt, the adventure, the views, and time spent with close friends and family. " Ryan Hatfield

HuntClubs/Leased land have destroyed and raised prices for the average hunter. You have to be buddy buddy with Mr. Gates and Paul Allen in order to hunt anymore(Joking,Kind Of).There is a huge hunt club here in Moses area that has all the land tied up, and they don't even have enough members to hunt all the property because they charge an arm and a leg for it.
Is it waterfowl season yet..............

I hunted the PSE land for the first time a few weeks before Christmas.  I filled out the form online, drove down the next day to the deadman creek store, picked up my info and truck pass from the girl working the store (she was the only one there), and went hunting.   I had no issues whatsoever.  We even killed 2 limits of birds.  :dunno:  I've hunted down there for 25 years, back before Deadman, when we'd get written permission from old man Clavanagh (sp?).   I don't hunt the leased land anymore because I can't stomach paying to hunt on someones land but there's still plenty of birds on public land and lots of landowners who will give permission if you ask them nicely.  Maybe my experiences have been the exception.  :dunno:

We hunted over there for years and quit going because of deadman creek outfitters and there watchdogs. Drive across the state and see a nice deer everyone wants to look at one and up drivers a suburban with deadman creek outfitters on it. Some ass hat starts telling you all about private property and you can;t be there. *censored* I am on a paved road and stop to look at a deer hell yes we know it;s private there is a sign every 100 feet. I don;t tresspass and can read just leave me alone if I am on a road it should be be againstthe law for them to even approach you if your on there land thats different.

Well, I shall try  :)

Our membership limit is 35, and we are full every year by the end of September, so if someone was trying to sell a membership to our club, then they were misrepresenting our operation.  It certainly was not me.

We have no land on Sweeney Gulch or in the foothills of the Blues.  There are a couple of clubs out there, but they  are not us.

We have no land up north by Colfax.  Most of our pproperty is in Garfield County, though we do have about 6,000 acres in Whitman County around Central Ferry.

Our store is only open weekends following deer season, and is closed for the year the weekend before Thanksgiving.  PSE approached us about helping the sportsmen out (we don't get paid for doing this nor do we get any special privileges)  I's certain we could have done a better job of managing the applicants, but I cannot afford to keep the place open for just that purpose.

I could share with you many stories about road hunters, poaching, parents making their kids lie, etc.  Let me just say that for every legitimate sportsman out there who we may have come across as heavy handed, I sincerely apologize.

The folks there at deadman creek are good people! Jack, who is the man in charge there is as honest as they come and would do anything to help you out. They have a good thing going there at deadman creek outfitters. I grew up hunting the deadman and there is no place like it. The place i grew up hunting was sold a few years back and i swore up and down i would never pay someone to hunt there. I ate my words this past season and thats when i met Jack Beasley, the boss of deadman creek outfitters. I had a great time, and it brought back many childhood memories hunting there with my family. I plan to go back there this year and take my wife on a hunt. It is a great place to make memories with family and friends!
