Cat Cages in Culverts

 I had been wondering if one needed to 'brush in' a cage set in a culvert to keep cats from walking past and/or satisfying their curiosity about your lures by sniffing the back of the cage.  Apparently NOT.  This 20 lb female was caught in a cage with black rolled roofing on the floor to cover the mesh and the treadle.  I put food and call lures in the space under the cage and sprayed it with bobcat urine.  The culvert was under a high built-up road crossing a deep brushy ravine that looked like cats would like it and use it to come down from the deep snows in the mountain.  I put the cage on the downhill side so that the night breeze would blow down through the culvert and broadcast the scent into the brushy ravine below.  Doing my trap check, I was happy to see the Snowshoe Hare tracks in the ravine and even happier when I got closer and saw the cat tracks headed for the culvert with the cage.

Great set in the culvert, its amazing how often cats travel through culverts and over bridges... :tup:

I shot a Bobcat near Wauconda one day. I went down to find it near a culvert and there was a tin of cat food in it.
A light went off in my noggin....

This is another culvert cat (29 lb. tom) but the culvert was also near a beaver pond and the intersection of a river and a highway.  I did use brushy bare branches to discourage a cat from trying to approach the cage from the rear and sides on this one because I have another culvert set that the cats are dancing all around without going in.  I'd really like to get some big double-door traps for cats so that I could catch anything that just wanted to get to the other side too.

Coyotes like culverts, too.  Don't be surprised if you find one of those in your trap one of these days!  :tup:
