Got my first goose! Long story warning :)
« on: January 06, 2013, 07:39:36 AM »
What a day! I had plans to go out to some public land yesterday and my partner bailed last minute. Decided what the heck... I'll go anyway. Maybe I'll get lucky. Upon arrival I see there are already some people on the far end of the site, so I figure I'll stay on the opposite end so I don't crowd them or anything. As I'm walking in I notice the lights getting closer to me and we eventually meet just as I'm getting to the water. "We've got an open spot in the blind... want to join us so we're not competing for birds?" Absolutely!!! If these people are on this forum I just want to give you another HUGE thank you for your generosity!

We get all the dekes set out and start our wait. Mostly ducks, but set some goose decoys out, just in case. Couple birds fly past before opening light... and a flock of widgeon that wanted nothing to do with us right at legal light. "HOLY $#!%!" I hear to my left. My head swivels and then I see them... a flock of at least 20 geese headed straight at us!!! The other guy in the blind starts calling. Apparently he sounded like Marylin Monroe Goose because they LOVED him. Flock starts calling back and about half the flock starts losing altitude.  Slowly they circle, talking with Marylin the whole time. Until this point I didn't realize just how big geese are! They look like airplanes as they come right at us! Finally they drop low enough and lock up, ready to land. "KILL EM!" he shouts.

We jump up and I pick one, line up, and fire. I can hardly believe it as it falls! Another goose hits the water at the same time. Well, apparently Marylin is one hot goose, because he starts calling again and they circle back around! :yike: As we're waiting to see if they'll come in again, I look up to see MY GOOSE TRYING TO WALK AWAY!!! NOOO!!! It takes everything I can do to not run out of the blind.  Flock finally tells us they want nothing to do with us and flies off.

At this point my goose made it to the water. Guy is walking to grab him after he picked up his goose, and mine turns and starts heading my way. I wade into the water to cut him off, take a step forward, and appparently at that point the water goes from thigh deep to over my head o_O Thankfully my Mossberg makes a great paddle that I can use to get back to where I can stand! That water is COLD this time of year!!! When I get back to where I can stand up I look over and see that the guy has made it to my goose. "Ouch!!! You %^#@@*!!" *BOOOOM*. Apparently my goose was related to Chuck Norris, since when he tried to grab it the goose turned around and bit him! Then he got shot again for the rude behavior. :chuckle:

I was soaked and frozen, but I got my first goose! I'm so happy!!!

That's great!  I keep a couple of 6's handy for shooting the birds if they try to swim/walk away and they are close enough, otherwise another shot with the big bb's.  I hate losing birds and it seems they can disappear pretty quickly and easily sometimes, especially w/o a dog around.  Again, good deal.

Jenny, I noticed in the pic that you're not wearing a wader belt. Always a good idea if you're gonna be around water deeper than your knees. It'll prevent water from filling up your waders on those long winter swims - of which I'm pretty good at myseld, LOL.

Congrates’ on your first goose !!!  This is my first year of picking up my first goose (Geese, 3) as well !!
The guy that was going to hunt with me, decided not to go as well…. So he missed out.  I have to say, it was one of my most memorable hunts ever in my life hunting geese.  Thanks for sharing !!  If you ever need a hunting partner for some goose hunting let me know !!

Thank you for the kind words and congratulations! I've already picked up a wader belt, but if I'm lucky I won't have another winter swim :yike: At least now I know there is water that deep there lol! I can't wait to go after geese again. I thought duck hunting was addictive... wow!!! Also, geese are tasty!! Yum!

Solid dinner right there. I'm glad you were able to get someone to take you out this year.

Jenny, you did very well, and the presentation on this entrée is beautiful.  All that is missing is some blackberry jam (yes, it goes well with rare goose).  Keep up the good work.

Congratulations!  For a first goose, that looks cooked to perfection!
As long as we have the habitat, we can argue forever about who gets to kill what and when.  No habitat = no game.
