How to find the caliber?

My buddy just got a savage110 from his dad that had passed away. We cannot find anything on the barrel. Now what, gunsmith?

Savage would have a serial number to that gun = caliber ?

If it's a 110 then it's a long action. Does it look like a factory barrel? If so that narrows down the possible calibers. Can you tell what the bore diameter is? If it's a 30 caliber bore, it's likely a 30-06 or a 300 Win Mag. Smaller than 30 and you'll get either a 7mm Mag or a 270 Win. If you can narrow down the bore diameter it will help.

Only thing on the barrel is his dad's name, making me think a custom, he did make the stock for the gun

That will make it a little more difficult. This may involve a trip to the gunsmith to be absolutely certain of the caliber. Any chance there are some old ammo boxes which could give a hint?

Savage barrels are easy to change out.

Not only slug the bore, but also get the chamber casted.
