Spring Bear Hunt Special Draw
« on: January 06, 2013, 12:43:27 AM »
I am considering applying for a Spring Bear tag. I have never hunted for a bear. Any of the draw hunts favor a novice bear hunter like myself? I would likely road hunt/spot and stalk. I am happy to get out and work for it, but I don't know how to hunt them. Any techniques or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks everyone!

There is a few great "sticky threads" at the top of this bear page, they have lots of great info to start with

One of the easiest tags to draw I would think is the kapowsin, not saying the bear hunting will be easy, I don't think any of the spring bear tags are easy. If you live close to the hancock properties and you want to gain some experience with bear hunting, I would think that tag is the one you want. But it is western wa so finding any bear is still tough. Good luck what ever you choose.

Try Copalis for road hunting. Lots of roads up there, a few bear and easy to draw as well.

Should also mention that kapowsin is a fee access area.  If you get drawn, you will need to pay to gain access to Hancock property.  Also, Hancock determines which areas are open to bear hunting and has closed large areas of their property to spring bear hunting the last few years.

Yes, I should have mentioned that. I think the access fee is half the price of the regular yearly fee, and I thought they opened 3 of the walkin units on the kapowsin side of the puyallup river. I've only killed one bear in there but I sure see a lot of sign. I think the state should have baiting permits (it should be legal but for now)!!!! Hey it's revenue for them, and they could keep good track of those who drew if they didn't give out too many. Just a thought.
