Chantrelles, did you get many in 2012?
« on: January 06, 2013, 07:17:28 PM »
Walking on two bad hips as I approached surgery this fall / this hunting season I did not get out specifically for Chantrelles. Usually I have bucket after bucket brought home during elk and late deer, sometimes even later...  I do a partial sautee and freeze them. They keep great this way.

How did you do this year?

Not many at all. My spots didn't produce until November and they weren't plentiful by any means. A couple buddies said the same...

i have gone to the same area every year but apparently some tweekers have decided to claim this area as theirs now, i kinda laughed at a few 80 lb guys making threats til one brandished his sidearms. i was very lucky to also have one on me and one on my buddy. Hopefully they are not there next year

From what I saw they where late this year. End of October. And you had to get them quick cause the rain and snow mushed them in a hurry.

That's exactly what I saw as well.

Where did you manage to get 20 gallons worth in one trip kracker? I may have to find a new spot, if I can fill a five gallon bucket I'm doing well in any of my spots.

Although late, in Kitsap county they were still very plentiful. Being on the board for Kitsap Myc society helps too! Lol
We here lots of reports.

Green Mountain was good once the rain came and our last foray on Dec 8th produced very well.

Our Newberry hill spot as well Banner were going strong as well.

However, my Shaggy Mane spot did not produce anything.  :(

Dont go on just pics. There are look a likes. A positive ID for mushrooms cannot be from a pic alone.

Some good info here.
The more you find the easier it gets for sure. Just be positive! Its better to go with someone who knows first.

We're still selling chanterelles from the coast. Yellowfoot, hedgehogs, and black trumpet are also starting to become abundant.

I didn't pick any this year.  Mostly just found isolated groups of maybe five shrooms and were really sparse.  Nothing like last year, when there were 'golden acres' of them.

Good advice. For each variety of mushrooms you want to pick, go with an experienced picker the first time so you can see where they grow, what they look like, smell like, etc. Also, in lieu of a partner, visual ID combined with a spore print is 99.99% accurate. Especially with chanterelles, there aren't so many look-alikes that it takes a scientist to identify. But, a free mushroom is never worth a life. Always be sure.
