Idaho info needed for elk.
« on: January 07, 2013, 07:40:55 PM »
Looking in to possibly going to Idaho this year for elk but not sure of the an to hunt  :dunno:

Been looking at the regs a bit and just starting to do my home work on in.

Any recommendation on do's, don'ts, or where to or not to hunt would help a lot.

Thanks for any info  :hello:

There's no elk left in Idaho. Wolves got them all. :chuckle:

At this point  :dunno:

Just starting to do my research and was looking for some good starting points from those that have hunted it. Still not 100% sure if we are doing Idaho but i like to have my duck in a row when going to a new area or state to hunt. The plan is for Colorado but that is looking to fall through and if it does, ID is my next choice.

We are planning on archery season, I would like to hunt the rut or as much of it as I can  :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:

Not looking for honey hole (yet) but areas or units to look at and to stay away from. Some advise on where the wolf have impacted the elk herd the most  :dunno:

I have heard good things about the pan handle but don't know for sure or areas to hunt up there.

Just my 2¢ worth:

The family has had an elk camp in the Cd'A mountains for 60+ years (truly).  Up until say 5 years ago, a diligent hunter could expect an elk every other year on average (work required, but very possible).  Nowadays there are more moose in those mountains than elk, I kid you not.  That is problem #1.

The second issue is the crazy "A" tag, "B" tag system.  You guys complain about WDFW all the time, and the westside/eastside tags over here, but try to figure out how to hunt with your family or buddies with these different tags.

General season gets harder and harder in the Panhandle, and recent years have been really dry and warm (rifles).  If I were spending your money, I would look at regions where large elk herds still exist (along the Snake river deep canyon, for example).

My information is all general season (never put in for special tags), and rifle specific.  Take it with three grains of salt.

Here's the deal with Idaho... Its gonna take lots of scouting and pto.  I'd suggest the panhandle tag, but it's a long season.  You get a lot of time to hunt and you gotta use it all. I cant give you a specific area because it has taken me lots of time and money to find them, but ill give you the advice i started with

We started two years ago and still have a lot of learning to do in the area.  I've been fortunate to tag out both years, but I live in Spokane and can hunt a lot.  Archery is the best time to locate the big bulls, but they are not gonna come running to you when you throw out a call, you really gotta know what is gonna piss them off and make them come in.  I've had the best luck in modern season   because the under brush starts to die, I can get close enough to the elk to take a shot , and I've found areas to hunt the elk hang out in.  Get ready for lots of hiking in thick timber and rain.  Idaho is a blast, just make sure you got the time and money to do it right.

Here is a excerpt from the Spokesman review also:

Antlerless elk hunting not allowed in Idaho Panhandle general elk seasons for first time in history; predation by wolves, cougars and bears cited as a major factor. Similarly, Washington, general-season elk hunters restricted to shooting only antlered bull elk throughout Ferry, Stevens and Pend Oreille counties.

I have been hunting the panhandle for the last two years and have been in elk but still have not tagged out.  If you hunt hard and do some scouting you should be able to get in them now getting a shot is another story in some of the areas..
