300wm bullet ?
« on: January 10, 2013, 09:21:18 PM »
I'm shooting weatherby vangaurd 1:10 26" tube.
Has any one tried the 110g vmax in 300wm. I have load data for it but wonder if they will handle the velocity and pressure  of the win mag. These would be a summer coyote round.
I have heard of them being used in slower twist barrels but not 1:10.
Thanks for your imput

Can't say that I've heard of anyone shooting that light of bullet in a 300wm.

There is a gunsmith (retired) named Richard Franklin who built heavy varmint rifles in 300 WSM, that used the 110 V-Max and the 125 Nosler BT.

He used a slow twist (1:15") and the results on critters were ugly.

My main concern would be stabilizing the bullet.  Barnes only shows data down to 125 gr.  Nosler was 150 gr(i think).

Not saying it couldnt be done, but a different rifle might be better.  And it's always good to buy another firearm!! :)

We loaded up some 110 Barnes TTSX for my dad in his 300 weatherby. He was thinking it would be a good round for antelope. We couldn't get it to group worth a darn and the wind really moved the bullet around. Not sure where deer park is at but you are welcome to them if you'd like to give it a shot. Those rounds sure were loud!

Hornady Manuel has load data for it. Just have an itch  may have to scratch it just to figure it out.  Was reading threw my manuels and saw it, figure it would be explosive.  Normaly I shoot nosler bt's in 165,180g. In the 300, normally I shoot coyote with 58g vmax out of my 243 @3710fps

My guess is that it would be hard to find an accurate load.  I would think 130 gr Varmint would be a better option.  :twocents:
May I always be the kind of person my dog thinks I am.

In many Rem700's I have tried the 110gr V-Max but settled on the 125gr Nosler Ballistic Tip for Yote's and Rockchucks. I have taken one small Mulie buck at about 300 yards with a 125 BT out of the .300 Win Mag. It was a bang flop. It was acctualy the first time I had heard a mulie let out a loud pig like squeal on bullet impact.

I found some load date in an old Sierra manual.  Let me know if you want a copy.
