Bear track size?
« on: September 17, 2008, 09:09:57 PM »
How big is a big bear track? I found this track tonight while scouting and thought it seemed pretty good sized?  :dunno: The gps unit is just under 5 inches. I really didn't expect to see this track where I did.

If the front pad measures 5" wide then the hide from that bear should square pretty close to 6'. Rufous.

Measure the front pad from left to right then add one and you can come pretty close in inches. My guess is that gps unit is about 3.5 inches wide. The track looks a bit wider +1 so maybe a 5 - 5.5 ft bear?

I would say that bear track is about the size of a handheld GPS... probably just a bit over 5".  That's odd, I usually expect to find bear tracks on the ground :chuckle:

Sorry for being a :sas:.... I just found it funny the way you worded your post and your question.  I'll  :stfu:  now :chuckle:

I've only gotten 4 bears to date.  I have been told that a 5" print is a great bear.  This spring I lucked out getting a 250-300 lb bear that was 80" nose to tail & 48" girth.  His print was 3.5".  Go Figgure.

A solid 5" across the front pad roughly equals an 18" skull (P&Y min).  There are a number of sows that get that big but most are from more northern latitudes.

I have never shot a bear before. I've been REALLY close to 3 different bears while hunting deer. The first was at 3 yards when it walked below the stump I was standing on while bowhunting. I didn't have a bear tag.  :bash: Another at 20 yards when I was rifle hunting. Again, no bear tag.  >:( Since then I've carried a bear tag. I was at full draw on a bear at 25 yards a few years ago but it turned just as it hit the opening and walked away from me.

These tracks are in the area I plan on hunting elk this year. Maybe we'll cross paths.  ;) Sounds like it's at least a decent/average bear for my first one.
